Google Sync: Now with push Gmail support

Earlier this year, we launched Google Sync which allows you to synchronize your Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar with your iPhone, Windows Mobile, and S60 devices. Today, we're adding Gmail support to Google Sync for iPhone, iPod Touch and Windows Mobile devices.

Using Google Sync, you can now get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your phone. Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you're doing. Sync works with your phone's native email application so there's no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three.

To try Google Sync, visit m.google.com/sync from your computer. If you're already using Google Sync, learn how to enable Gmail sync. Since push Gmail has been a popular request on our Product Ideas page and Help Forum, we look forward to hearing your feedback, so drop us a line and let us know how it's working or what you'd like to see next.

Update at 8:20am: We jumped the gun on this post. The new feature should be rolling out in a few minutes.

  1. Will this work for Google Apps for Your Domain?

  2. There seems to be a typo since Blackberry is missing from the list. :(

  3. Will there be BlackBerry support? Or is this WinMo/iPhone/S60 only?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Great, but was hoping for native full two-way sync Gmail for Blackberry's.

    ReplyDelete
  5. @Kevin

    Push is native in Android.

I believe this applies only to WinMo/iPhone/S60.

  6. you are fantastic guys!

    thank you...

    ReplyDelete
  7. This is fantastic. I've always been wanting to check that email box when setting up Google Sync on my WinMo phone, now I finally can!

    This is awesome... thanks guys...

  9. This is brilliant.. except I am sure i wont be the only one asking for a way to HIDE the many labels that now appear..

I would like a settings - somewhere in gmail - to HIDE them, just like you can with IMAP...

I have many and it's bulging my eyes!

  10. The lack of Blackberry support is disappointing...

  11. If you already have an exchange account set up (work email) then you can't do this?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sweet sweet sweet! I have been waiting for this for a while now. Very happy for this announcement! Great job Google, again!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I've been waiting for this since Google Sync first came out on WinMo...a big thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Excellent! Just enabled it on my iPhone and it works fine. *PUSH* absolutely works. Nice.

Yes, it works with Google Apps too.

Quick HOWTO make it work if you already had "pull" mail on the iPhone working.

    1. Settings->Mail.

    2. Choose the separate "mail" account you already had.

    3. Delete that account. You won't lose any mail this way, just the link between the iPhone and your Gmail account.

    4. If you already had Sync working, just go to that account and turn on Mail syncing. Wait a minute or two for it to take effect fully.

    5. If you didn't have Sync already, follow instructions here: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139195

  15. useless if you are using Exchange for work email already :(

  16. For Blackberry users...Gmail has had push enabled on the BB for along time now.

    ReplyDelete
  17. which is why i love blackberries :)

  18. How about some MFE support for S60 devices:) Adding GMail to the Contacts and Calendar functionality would be like Christmas in September:)

    ReplyDelete
  19. This is very cool and all ... for people who don't use exchange for work. Some day I will get gmail push without having to use exchange ... or apple will enable multiple exchange syncs.

    ReplyDelete
  20. This is excellent news!

I've been wanting to use Google Sync, but have been held back for several reasons. Now one of the major road blocks is lifted.

One question though. I have the Nokia N97, and I'm currently synchronizing my email, contacts and calendar using Nokia's Mail for Exchange. What will happen if I add on yet another synchronization method?

    ReplyDelete
  21. For iPhone users there's a better option. Get gpush and it won't drain your battery by pushing emails. It uses apples push notification system. After gpush lets you know that you have an email you can go to mail and fetch it manualy without the extra battery drain from constantly connecting to the gmail server

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gpush is a complete joke. All it does is send you a push notification. It doesn't actually push the email to your phone. I purchased that app and then got my money back from Apple because it is useless. Why would you want just a push notification for your email. It would make more sense to actually have your actual email pushed to your device.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thank you so much! You just made my day.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Clarifying this comment earlier: "One question though. I have the Nokia N97, and I'm currently synchronizing my email, contacts and calendar using Nokia's Mail for Exchange. What will happen if I add on yet another synchronization method?"

I'm currently using Nokia's Mail for Exchange (MfE) to synchronize my company email (a separate mail folder in my N97 messaging app), contacts, and calendar entries. The mail part of the synchronization should be not a problem, since I'll simply create yet another mail folder to sync GMail. But the question/concern is the calendar and contacts, since they're a single store. What will happen if I enable Google Sync for these two, while simultaneously synchronize the same things via MfE?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Will there be a version of the software for N97 users?

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Baxter Tocher:

I thought when they wrote S60 in the first sentence, I thought it was included. Apparently not. =(

    ReplyDelete
  27. just a few months behind nuevasync this time :P

    ReplyDelete
  28. To Ryan, like I said; push drains your battery significantly. The whole point of push is to let you know when you have an email instantly. After you know that you got an email from gpush it will take seconds for the iPhone to fetch your mail once you open the mail app. In short push drains battery, gpush doesn't.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Its a nice step in the right direction but still doesnt fill the needs.

A LOT of us have work Exchange account already on our iPhones (one of the reasons we got a iPhone over a T-Mobile G1) and therefore this service is useless (since your only allowed 1 Exchange account on your phone). Say for just a second that I didnt have a existing Exchange account. There still is no e-mail threading wich is annoying when you have large conversations in your Gmail account.

I beg of you guys to offer a Native Gmail client like the Android one for the iPhone with Push notifications as that would solve all issues at hand.

    Thanks for listening.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I guess I just don't want a push notification showing up over the top of what I'm doing on my work phone for my personal gmail. I do however want a subtle beep and the number to increase in my mail app ... so I know to check my gmail when I get a chance. I would also like the the email to be there when I go to check it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. At Kris:

I completely agree with everything you said. I second that!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I just want to jump on the "please find us a way to do multiple EAS accounts!" bandwagon.

    ReplyDelete
  33. works majestically on the iPhone. although now, i have to wait slightly for email to load.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @ Ryan. Those benifits must be worth slot to you since the iPhones battery life already sucks as it is. I barely get through the day without push.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @StHalcyon Nope, it's not on the list.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I really wish Apple and Google would get together and figure out a way to do multiple EAS connections.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Awesome. This works so well I don't need gmail notifier on my PC anymore as I can now hear my iPhone telling me I have a new email. :)

I did a test couple of emails and it was really fast.

    ReplyDelete
  38. At Boruch Siper:

I have exchange sync for my main email, contacts, and calendar.

I set gmail to pull ... once an hour.

Moderate use I get a day out of my phone.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks a lot guys, I've been waiting for this

    ReplyDelete
  40. I just set everything up and now my iPhone can't seem to load any past email in any folder/tag. New emails come in without an issue, but anything in my inbox that was there before I set up push is AWOL.

I'll give it some time, but just curious if anyone else is experiencing this.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks! This plus Google Voice SMS to e-mail means i am not victim to AT&T SMS extortion. Thank you!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. @ jshwb same here, no past emails loading

    ReplyDelete
  43. @jshwbb: same here. Although some of my folders are loading (just very slowly). I'd chalk it up to their servers getting hammered with millions of iPhone users turning this on at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have a Moto Q9c. I have a Google Apps account and have been able to successfully sync my Cal and Contacts without an issue in the past. I tried pushing mail but I get repeated errors after it says its synchronizing folders, looking for changes.

Support code error I'm getting is 0x800004005.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Ryan it's a limitation of EAS not anything in the Apple / Google implementation.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It's very cool, thank from France!! <3

    ReplyDelete
  47. Do I need to delete and set up my exchange server from scratch? I turned Mail on and it does not work at all...

    ReplyDelete
  48. I just tried enabling email on MfE for my N97. Gmail syncs fine for this S60V5 device!

    ReplyDelete
  49. BIG THUMBS UP. It worked flawlessly out of the box. Well done, guys!

    ReplyDelete
  50. thanks god - took 'em a while, but i am happy.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Update guys and gals, head over to your settings screen for your Gmail Exchange account. You'll notice two new settings:

    http://gallery.me.com/joshwebb/100090/Push%20Gmail

It still hasn't loaded the old email, but I think this may be a step in the right direction.

    ReplyDelete
  52. @delf Would you mind sharing how you did that, please?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Can we ever hope to see syncing of more than just the default calendar though? That's what I care about!

    ReplyDelete
  54. All I did was setup my N97 for contacts and calendar previously.

When this annoucement came out all I did was go into the MfE setup. Slide over a couple of pages to email. Turn the sync email to on. Set my email address and told it to synchronize. It downloaded my last 3 days of email into a "mail for exchange" folder on my email screen.

    ReplyDelete
  55. @Baxter Tocher or anyone with an S60 device:

You can get GMail push, even if Google didn't specify S60! This is possible because I was looking at http://www.google.com/mobile/products/sync.html, and I noticed this: "Important! Google Sync uses the Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync® protocol."

Well, hello! If you have not tried or installed Nokia's free MfE (Mail for Exchange), then go to http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/mail-for-exchange and download the latest version of MfE for your device. MfE is Nokia's app for ActiveSync.

Once installed, follow these when creating your MfE profile:

    [Credentials Tab]
    Username: username@gmail.com
    Password: [self_explanatory]
Domain: google (this cannot be left blank)

    [Connection Tab]
    Exchange server: m.google.com
    Secure connection: Yes
Access point: [S60 3rd Edition, select your wireless 3G/GPRS connection, or if your WiFi connection. S60 5th Edition, select your Destination that includes both your wireless 3G/GPRS AP and WiFi, and sort WiFi with higher priority.]
Sync while roaming: [Choose the appropriate one according to your plan.]
    Use default port: Yes

Now, you can enable Email, Calendar and Contacts in other tabs.

Go to Sync schedule tab, and select one of the following choices: Manual, Always on, 15 min, 30 min, 1 hr, 4 hr or 12 hr.

Go to your S60 home screen, or go to your S60 messaging app, and select Mail for Exchange. Click on Options > Synchronize. Wait...

    Voila!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Got it set up, synced folders just fine, tested sending and receiving email. Not working yet, about five mins, MobileMe -> GmaiL/about 5 mins,
    GmaiL -> MobileMe/ about 1 min.
GmaiLs servers are prob experiencing a meltdown right now, ill give it a day to really test it out, have no doubts it will work fine

    ReplyDelete
  57. I cannot thank you enough! Working great!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Of course, we Nokia/SE (S60) users are in the same predicament as the WinMo/iPhone users... ActiveSync only supports one profile. Not multiple. So in my case, I have to choose either GMail or my company mail.

Until Nokia makes improvements to MfE to support multiple EAS profiles, I think I'm going to stick with my corporate mail, and just use the native mail app and access GMail using IMAP.

At least it works on S60!!! =)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Any way to change the "from" address on the iphone? I have my company email address set for gmail on the web. Don't see that as a default here...

    ReplyDelete
  60. [iPhone] Issues
-Old mail doesn't show up in "Inbox", even with 'no limit' exchange setting on iPhone
-[GMAIL] tree and all labels are displayed in the Mail app with no way to hide them. With IMAP, I successfully removed this noise with IMAP prefix set to [GMAIL] on my iPhone. With Exchange, there is no equivalent way to maintain this Mail app folder view with the limited iPhone and 0 web gmail settings.

I switched back to a IMAP and the gpush solution due to these issues.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Thank you Thank you Thank you Google! You guys are amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  62. its definately not "pushing." i sent a test message 10 mins ago and it still hasn't arrived

    ReplyDelete
  63. on iPhone, data retrieval set to push.

Turned on wi-fi to do the initial sync and get everything on the same page.

Sent first test e-mail, no push notification after waiting for 5 minutes. This is after loading the web interface and seeing the e-mail there to make sure it sent.

Went into mail, message loaded very quickly.

Sent another test message -- yet to see a push notification for it; been about 5-10 min now.

    ReplyDelete
  64. not working yet. i'm sure they'll post an update when it is.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Ive also been waiting a good 15 minutes for the push to go thru with no results. I assume its working for some people, could someone post how long they are waiting for e-mails when they get them? I still havent seen any reports on the Google App Status page (http://www.google.com/appsstatus)

    ReplyDelete
  66. "The connection to the server failed"

    ReplyDelete
  67. Google, it appears that the email sync is working with MfE as expected. But why is your help reference (http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=147951) indicating that the mail sync in MfE is "currently not supported by Google Sync"? It clearly functions as expected. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  68. @Allen "For Blackberry users...Gmail has had push enabled on the BB for along time now."

Yes, but not full two-way sync. For example,

-Read/Unread from device, read/unread on Gmail and vice versa.
-Delete/archive from device, delete/archives on Gmail and vice versa.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm wondering how this works if I'm already syncing my Contacts and Calendar through Google Sync on my iPhone (using the Microsoft Exchange account)...

Do I simply turn "on" the Mail feature? Or do I need to delete the whole account and then adding it again and at the initial setup choosing "on" for Mail, Contacts and Calendars?

    ReplyDelete
  70. I got it to work on my iPhone 3GS, but it's VERY very slow to sync (over 5 minutes)

    ReplyDelete
  71. this is the second time i fell in love with gmail and google!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Turned on the Exchange system (had been using IMAP) ... all seemed to be working as I noticed that my test msg resulted in an updated new-mail count at the home screen within a minute or so--cool!

However deleting mail from an alternate source did not result in an updated (decreased) mail count on the home screen within 15 mins... and there seemed to be a not-insignificant delay when opening mail and actually seeing the new mail (vs. the previous amt of time required to grab new mail via IMAP).

Given all that I'll just stick to IMAP and 15 or 30-min Fetch for the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  73. On my iPhone, I've been using it to get my Gmail for a long time already using the iPhone mail app. How is this push thing using Google Sync better? (I'm already using Sync to get my contacts and calendar)

    ReplyDelete
  74. What Kris said (native Gmail app for iPhone with push support).

Please. Go on, there's no way Apple'll reject it.

    Please?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Like some other posters here, I can get it to work, but syncing takes a very, very long time. I don't know if this is some initial sync period where all my mail is syncing to my iPhone or something... Maybe tomorrow it'll be as fast as IMAP?

    ReplyDelete
  76. update that

    http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=147951

    great job!

    ReplyDelete
  77. If only my iPhone would let me have my work Exchange profile AND Google Sync...

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'm also having some trouble.

I'm using google apps for domains, sync is turned on, but it's incredibly slow.

Are the servers simply overwhelmed or is there something I'm missing?

    ReplyDelete
  79. I have 24 emails in my inbox, not archived, and the sync is only pulling 14 of the emails into my iPhone. There are older important emails that are in my inbox that the sync is not pulling into the iphone mail app!! What is the deal there?

    ReplyDelete
  80. It doesn't work for me. Do you use @gmail.com or @googlemail.com? My email address has always been @gmail.com. I'm confused here. It says cannot connect to server, i've tried both @googlemail and @gmail.....

    ReplyDelete
  81. Thanks so much for adding this! Gmail is a superb service and just keeps getting better!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I am a little concerned. I deleted my old activesync account (google through neuvasync) when I just read that gmail push will now support email as well as calendars and contacts. I set everything back up, and now none of my contacts are coming back. A few of my emails have come through VERY slowly but no contacts or calender data......

    ReplyDelete
  83. not working for me. not only it not pushing the new test email that I just sent, but it won't fetch it either. I'm thinking that I'll try back in a couple of days and see if things are better.

    ReplyDelete
  84. @Rob Im having the same problem. It seems the new mail sync feature has brought some buggy startup issues along ;) All of my contacts and calendar events are wiped. I deleted my old exchange account to create a whole new one.

I do get an rotating icon in my iPhone taskbar when I open the Contacts.app but no contacts are synced yet. Guess I have to wait a bit more.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Just set this up and it's horribly slow!!! Please add more servers as quickly as possible. It's taking 10 mins for me to get a push notification when a new email arrives...also can't view any other folder other than the Inbox!

    ReplyDelete
  86. @deeds! I am exactly the same as you!! deleted exchange acct and created one and ratating icons.. my calendar and emails...

hope they fix or solve this soon.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Thanks for not being evil Google. Prove that I no longer have to run my exchange server. /dance

    ReplyDelete
  88. Great in theory, horrid in practice. The slowness may just be server overload due to the sudden influx of rabid iPhoners, but test messages are taking 10+ minutes to push, phone-side deletes are taking 20+ minutes to register in the web interface, and my mailbox repeatedly failed its initial sync attempt. Haven't been able to load any unpushed boxes (e.g. Sent) successfully yet. At this point, using IMAP and pulling seems more practical, which is sort of sad.

    ReplyDelete
  89. @seungjin Im feeling so empty inside, because I know my iPhone is too :P

Hang in there, I have faith they'll fix it soon enough.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I have been waiting for this for soooooo long. Thank you google.

    ReplyDelete
  91. It would have been fun to see network statistics for the servers after posting this blogpost.

I have my contacts intact but my calendar is not synced, have changed to CalDAV temporarily until they sort things out

    ReplyDelete
  92. Thanks Google!

I just hope that the errors and extreme slowness are because every iPhone+Gmail user on the planet is trying to get this to work today...

If this is the way it's always going to be, meh....

    ReplyDelete
  93. My contacts are starting to come through, 50 at a time like every 10 minutes or so. The email is still not working worth a darn, hasn't synched up my folders or anything....I'm okay with it though, I think, like others have mentioned, once the bajillion gmail users get all synched up things will start to return to normal..

    ReplyDelete
  94. All,

I just set everything up and it does take a while. It took a while to load old emails, receive test emails sent from another account and sync all my contacts.

I'm sure it's because everyone in the world is turning this feature on and the servers are being taxed. I'd give it a few days before the push feature is up to speed.

Give it some time and everything will be uploaded just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I already had this working for my contacts and calendar. But it won't work for email.

I've tried to set it up twice! Says it can't connect.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I had to do a double take on this one. This is what everyone's been waiting for! =D

Thanks a bunch for letting me finally ditch my separate exchange account.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Unfortunately, I have an Exchange account at work, and when I try to add Google as a second Exchange account on the iPhone, I am prompted with:
    Account Already Exists
Only one Exchange ActiveSync account can be configured.

    ReplyDelete
  101. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
This is what I was waiting for !!
    Great JOB !

  102. Gabe said: Any word on tasks?

There's an app for that - GeeTasks. No push, but at least it does sync/offline thingie.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Using just my username (without @gmail.com) in the username field worked for me.

The server might be overloaded right now, also.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Wow, that's great! Now if only they had tasks which I've been begging to find a solution for my WINDOWS MOBILE PHONE!

Geetasks may work decent, but it does not work for windows mobile! Are there any ways to sync tasks with my windows mobile phone?

I'm a flashing w..re and i hate having to restore tasks!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Thanks for the feedback. As you've noticed, the service has been slow for some as we deal with the increased demand. We're working furiously to increase capacity so if you bear with us, we hope to have speeds back to normal soon.

We'll be following up in the Help Forum as things progress, so stop by there if you have more questions, requests, or discussion topics!

  106. I have a windows mobile phone and I had my contacts and calender syncing with Google Sync via active sync before. Today, I tried using Google sync for email, and it just seems like it gets pushed slowly. I waited for about 7 minutes to get an email pushed. I used to use SEVEN and I got it within a minute or so. Anyhow, I hope its just the servers being overloaded...

    ReplyDelete
  107. What about Tasks??

Why isn't it possible zo sync th tasks?? =(

    ReplyDelete
  108. It would be nice if at least you acknowledged the "other" device in the list of supported phones. (aka Palm Pre)

    ReplyDelete
  109. Why do all you people keep asking about Blackberry support??

Blackberries have supported Push for years, that's why they aren't mentioned...They don't need it!

GPush has also supported push with blackberries (as blackberries are natively 'push' devices). I've had google sync on my phone for a very long time, and all my emails are pushed instantly. In fact, if I'm sitting there refreshing my gmail on my comp (did this as a test), My phone will buzz BEFORE it shows up on the computer most of the time. Simply amazing. No other phone like it.

    ReplyDelete
  110. For some reason activating this had the following affects:
    a. battery drain increased.
    b. phone became extremely hot.
    c. charging the phone did not seem to actually work.
    --
there are other issues like slow response but those could be attributed to the server load.
    ----
eventually i removed it and went back to Gpush and regular gmail account set up..

    ReplyDelete
  111. THANK YOU GOOGLE!

This feature was a long-awaited one and I'm cheering.

Although, two issues are making me hesitate:

The [Gmail] folder/label tree that allegedly one can't get rid of in Push Gmail (It can be done in IMAP, by adjusting the prefix), along with the alleged inability of hiding certain labels/folders to appear on the iPhone device.

And the second bummer for me is:

    (quote from http://bit.ly/T70MO )

"On the other hand, using Gmail Drafts from your phone is not possible via Google Sync."

I couldn't quite understand the reason.

All in all, I'm still very excited and happy for the announcement. I'm just going to take my time and use push after I overlook its tiny thorns.

    ReplyDelete
  112. After I enabled the push Gmail on my iPhone, now my email is super slow to load, you do get the push email right the way, however it takes forever to load if you are able to load at all. Unlike other exchange emails, this thing really takes forever to even load.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Once again Google has made something great even better. I'm using so many Google tools right now it's crazy.

Thanks again for this. Please keep up your amazing work.

I did notice some slowness, I hope that its addressed soon.

    ReplyDelete
  114. The gmail exchange is very slow and it drains my battery because it is takes to long to sync. Also my older emails in my inbox does not show up even though I set sync to no limit. Good intentions by the Google team, but poor implementation. Disabled exchange for gmail and went back to imap. My calender and contacts still work fine. Please fix!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Worked for a bit, now constantly getting "Cannot Get Mail the connection to the server failed"

    ReplyDelete
  116. Wow. Just turned it on. Thank you thank you thank you. My iPhone investment is now complete. I will be looking to justify my yearly investment in mobile me, but I'm leaning your way. What do I get for 120.00 Cdn per year with you guys? I just need google latitude to replace "find my iPhone" and I'm set.

  117. Cool, thanks.

    Would be cool though if...

    1. You could change the from address like you can in the imap/web versions.

    2. If iPhone could support multiple exchange servers, more an Apple or is it Microsoft problem.

    Keep up the good work.

    Matt.

  118. good work, yesterday I was speaking to the apple iphone support. because I already had activated push but didn't get my mail instantly. looking at my phone bill, I was not happy because my iphone connected every 15 minutes and I had to pay money for every connection. apple iphone support said googlemail does not support push service. and because of that reason, the iphone would connect every time to look for new mails.
Now, there is a better solution! push service! Really good, its faster and even helping me to save money, because the iPhone doesn't have to connect every time to the mail server. Thank you!

  119. MfE from Nokia really is not a very good client as a lot of you pointed out. I was extremely happy when I switched to Seven (beta program at Seven.Com). Till this day I am happily syncing contacts (gmail) and calendar (gmail) and get push mail (multiple accounts) without any problems.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Thanks a lot!
Now, please enable this for tasks also.

    ReplyDelete
  121. AHHH 2 days after I purchase gpush.

    ReplyDelete
  122. It IS working for S60 (at least on my N97)

Thanks! Looking forward for tasks sync.

  123. Can someone explain how this would be different than the Gmail app that is currently available on my Blackberry? It seems to 'sync' perfectly with my online account, and I get notified of new Gmail just like I get notified of new corporate mail on my Blackberry. Am I missing something? I feel like I've had Gmail integration on my BB for years.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Was very slow for me, and never recieved push notifications while I tested. This was on the iPhone 3Gs.

  125. Calendar only synced one of my google calendars...

  126. @Kevin Mogee

Same here... In fact, before I turned notifications off, I was getting buzzed quite often when new mail came in... BB Curve 8310 -- It's great!

    Be Well!

  127. TO EVERYONE SAYING BLACKBERRIES DO NOT NEED THIS:

You are wrong. You obviously don't know the intricacies and the long road that Gmail users on BIS have on, waiting for true, 2-way push.
Gmail users on BIS have had POP (1-way push) for years now, yes. But that's POP (much worse than IMAP). And it didn't synchronize anything at all.
Just a few months ago, RIM implemented IMAP push with one-way synchronization from BB to web in BIS version 2.7. We're still waiting for them to complete the process to 2-way; hence, WE WANT THIS ON OUR BLACKBERRYS.
    Thank you.

  128. Well I thought everything was working and I was in the clear but....

All my contacts and all my calender events are synced (the good news) but the email is still pretty much fubar. Nevermind the fact that it's push email and still taking way to long to actually push - I can blame that on the rush of people (including me) turning this feature on and strangling the servers. However, my inbox appears to have the correct emails but all the other folders (roughly 70 or so) have no synced up to receive their respective emails. A few of the folders have a few of the emails but for the most part it isn't working at all. It appears to have nothing to do with time constraints because some email as young as a week old are not syncing up with the folder. I have the email configured to sync all email regardless of age but it doesn't seem to matter. It isn't as though the phone is having an error because it goes through the motions of checking email/etc but it just doesn't pull down the emails in the folders. I'm very frustrated...

  129. I'm a Blackberry Tour owner. No support? I am sad and dissapointed, and bow my head in shame.

    ReplyDelete
  130. One observation. When you delete items on your phone (at least on a WM Phone), it archives the email under "all mail".

With IMAP, it didn't move the mail items to the trash, but at least it applied the "deleted items" label.

    Any chance of updating this?

    ReplyDelete
  131. I hope the bugs are worked out soon and you guys move on to getting google sync to support multiple/shared calendars. Until then, I'll continue using nuevasync.com

    ReplyDelete
  132. You are my heroes!
Thank you for this great service.
ATM its really slow on my iPhone but I am sure it will get faster soon

    ReplyDelete
  133. I have been using IMAP connection on my humble Sony Ericsson mobile phone and it already does push-email for a long time? Works great, just as it should.
If we'd have calendar sync over syncml for our basic phones that would be very nice too.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Seems the "search on server" is not working using the googles's exchange connector.
    This was ok over imap.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Is it also possible to use this Exchange account(with Push) with apple mail(Snowleo) or Outlook?

    ReplyDelete
  136. Work for Google apps even disable mobile support.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Some problems I have on an iPhone

    1. Only sync last months of mails! and my iPhone is set to "no limit"

    2. Deleting mails on the iPhone doesn't work correctly. After the mail is deleted it can't be found in the Trash on the iPhone or via the Gmail web interface. the only way to find the mail via search! when a mail is deleted the inbox label is removed.. but it does not get the Trash label!! the same thing when moving mails to trash folder..

    ReplyDelete
  138. Thanks, It works great on a HTC S740 (Windows Mobile). I can now delete the imap account!

I hope tasks will come to someday, because a mobile is something you have on you all the time.

  139. This works on my E71; however, it is very slow compared with using SEVEN.
On SEVEN I got the mail within seconds. On MFE using google sync it took over 5 mins then I got impatient and did a manual sync.
Also can't access my IMAP folders on MFE unlike SEVEN.

    ReplyDelete
  140. As a solution - Seven is hardly comparable. You have to install a client side app on your PC which must be running and connected to the internet to have the functionality you need. Pretty much useless in my opinion....

  141. BTW, works for UIQ3 phones as well (via DataViz ExchangeActive Sync)

  142. anyone notice the iphone count be doubled as compared to the actual unread msgs? yesterday this was working fine but last nite & this morning i'm noticed for every 1 unread msg in gmail, i have 2 on my phone (the # indicator on the mail icon)...when i go into the mail app its only showing 1. i only have about a dozen msgs in my inbox so i'm not missing anything i believe...

    anyone else seeing this??

    ReplyDelete
  143. Wow, great job & great news! I've been waiting for that for long time! Thank!!!!

  144. Should also work with any Sony Ericsson phone with an exchange activesync client, i.e., from W910 and later. I just tried it successfully with a G705.

  145. This is WONDERFUL! I access my business mail through gMail so to have it update real time is simply amazing. I was hoping this support would be added soon. I love having my contacts baced up. I'm about to purchase the New HTC Touch Pro 2 for Sprint and seeing as how I use my gCalendar to set appointments, gContacts to keep all my numbers & my gMail to keep in touch w/ everyone, this just made my business day!!!

  146. Very flacky yesterday and this morning.... Message would show in the web interface and not in the iPhone app, also for some reason when I do go in to the inbox all the messages would be gone then would reapear with a download. Push did not work at all this morning, even manual refresh doesnt show messages.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Messages will not delete from iPhone. When i try to delete I get message "Unable to Move Message The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash."

I am not able to manually move it to the Trash folder either.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Good move -now to S60, right?? :D

    ReplyDelete
  149. I stick to IMAP for the following reasons:

    1. Push over Active Sync is way to flacky at the moment.

    2. Even if it worked fine, I am not sure if I want my battery to last 6 hours per day on my iPhone 3G.

Nevertheless, thank you very much for the effort and the services you provide.

I sync my calendar and contacts to apps gmail and stick to imap for mails so far since I am fine with fetching mails every 15 mins on my device.

  156. I've been syncing contacts and calendar to my phone for months, but with my Apps for Domains email account, I'm unable to turn on email without ActiveSync failing, yielding the 0x800004005 error someone else mentioned above.

I turned on ActiveSync's verbose logging and am getting a <Status>8</Status> response to an INBOX:virtual query which search results would have me believe normally corresponds to a server misconfiguration.

I waited a bit to see if it might have just been load related, but it was still occurring in the middle of the night as well as today.

  157. Tried using the google sync push email and had terrible results. Calendar and contacts have worked great but when I enabled email it would push email in 45seconds at best. My inbox did not download a lot of the email that had been opened like it does with IMAP. There was duplicate labels/folders created. I had 3 sent folders for some reason. Long story short I disabled google push and went back to IMAP gmail with the 3rd party application "Gpush" It's super fast, 1-2 second push notifications, displays the email sender and subject pop up. Much happier with Gpush!! Thank god for that App!!!

  158. Works on my iPhone. Contacts/Calendar/Mail its all in sync. Gotta love Google, thanks guys!

    ReplyDelete
  159. Just switched back to Nuevasync - this is just too buggy and Nueva works flawlessly. I was hoping to switch to this because it's free but for the $25, it's worth having something that works...

I know Gmail will get there eventually but I think I had better give them some time to work out the kinks...

    ReplyDelete
  160. @StHalcyon Many thanks for your help. The options on the N97 here were *slightly* different, but nevertheless your instructions got it up and running fine.

And the contact sync is simply awesome!

Thanks again, and thanks to the developers :)

  161. This does not help those of us who already use Exchange for our work email. That leaves my 2 gmail accounts on POP for the foreseeable future.

    ReplyDelete
  162. @Baxter Tocher: You're welcome. I'm glad the instructions were helpful.

@Ethan (or anyone who complained at Google for the one Exchange account limitation): That is not Google's problem. It's your device software problem. The native iPhone mail app with Exchange support, as well as Nokia's MfE application, is designed to only handle one EAS account/profile. This is a problem with the respective software. If you have an iPhone, take it up with Apple. If you have a Nokia, take it up with Nokia. If you absolutely need to set up multiple Exchange accounts, then currently the only offering is the Palm Pre, which supports multiple Exchange accounts.

  166. Trying this in Singapore unfortunately not working. "Error in Communication" message.

Tried putting in full gmail address e.g. "jonathanlee@gmail.com" and just the username "jonathanlee" into the Credentials section of the sync profile (earlier post from someone said just the username worked for them) but neither worked.

    ReplyDelete
  167. I've been using sync for calendar and contacts and it's worked great. I enable mail today. It's slow, but it sounds like a common complaint that's being addressed.

Maybe I'm dense, but what does this really buy me over IMAP? Sure, it's push. But when I check email on my iPod Touch I habitually press the "check mail" icon anyway. Okay, I might have to wait an extra 8 seconds for the very last messages to come across, but that's not a big deal to me.

Are there other reasons to use it?

  175. It might be worth mentioning that as yet this service does not appear to be available from Australia.

    ReplyDelete
  176. @John Mayson: You can't set up Outlook to connect to the Exchange server for several reasons. A) Between GMail's servers and your device is this thing called Exchange ActiveSync. Consider this an API of some sort. B) You're assuming that GMail's mail servers are Microsoft Exchange. I'll bet that it is not, and probably something proprietary. They simply made it to work with EAS.

But you can easily configure Outlook with IMAP. The moment you get an email, it shows up in Outlook. So you don't really need to "synchronize" since you're already being kept most up to date on server changes.

  180. @Johny Mayson: to use gmail with outlook in a proper way you just need to get the Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook (http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/outlook_sync.html). it's just 50$/ person/ year.

    so long&greetz
