Using Google Sync, you can now get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your phone. Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you're doing. Sync works with your phone's native email application so there's no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three.

Quick HOWTO make it work if you already had "pull" mail on the iPhone working.
1. Settings->Mail.
2. Choose the separate "mail" account you already had.
3. Delete that account. You won't lose any mail this way, just the link between the iPhone and your Gmail account.
4. If you already had Sync working, just go to that account and turn on Mail syncing. Wait a minute or two for it to take effect fully.
5. If you didn't have Sync already, follow instructions here: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139195

For iPhone users there's a better option. Get gpush and it won't drain your battery by pushing emails. It uses apples push notification system. After gpush lets you know that you have an email you can go to mail and fetch it manualy without the extra battery drain from constantly connecting to the gmail server
ReplyDeleteGpush is a complete joke. All it does is send you a push notification. It doesn't actually push the email to your phone. I purchased that app and then got my money back from Apple because it is useless. Why would you want just a push notification for your email. It would make more sense to actually have your actual email pushed to your device.

ReplyDeleteI'm currently using Nokia's Mail for Exchange (MfE) to synchronize my company email (a separate mail folder in my N97 messaging app), contacts, and calendar entries. The mail part of the synchronization should be not a problem, since I'll simply create yet another mail folder to sync GMail. But the question/concern is the calendar and contacts, since they're a single store. What will happen if I enable Google Sync for these two, while simultaneously synchronize the same things via MfE?
Will there be a version of the software for N97 users?

ReplyDeleteTo Ryan, like I said; push drains your battery significantly. The whole point of push is to let you know when you have an email instantly. After you know that you got an email from gpush it will take seconds for the iPhone to fetch your mail once you open the mail app. In short push drains battery, gpush doesn't.

ReplyDeleteA LOT of us have work Exchange account already on our iPhones (one of the reasons we got a iPhone over a T-Mobile G1) and therefore this service is useless (since your only allowed 1 Exchange account on your phone). Say for just a second that I didnt have a existing Exchange account. There still is no e-mail threading wich is annoying when you have large conversations in your Gmail account.
I beg of you guys to offer a Native Gmail client like the Android one for the iPhone with Push notifications as that would solve all issues at hand.

I guess I just don't want a push notification showing up over the top of what I'm doing on my work phone for my personal gmail. I do however want a subtle beep and the number to increase in my mail app ... so I know to check my gmail when I get a chance. I would also like the the email to be there when I go to check it.

ReplyDeleteWhen this annoucement came out all I did was go into the MfE setup. Slide over a couple of pages to email. Turn the sync email to on. Set my email address and told it to synchronize. It downloaded my last 3 days of email into a "mail for exchange" folder on my email screen.

ReplyDeleteYou can get GMail push, even if Google didn't specify S60! This is possible because I was looking at http://www.google.com/mobile/products/sync.html, and I noticed this: "Important! Google Sync uses the Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync® protocol."
Well, hello! If you have not tried or installed Nokia's free MfE (Mail for Exchange), then go to http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/mail-for-exchange and download the latest version of MfE for your device. MfE is Nokia's app for ActiveSync.
Once installed, follow these when creating your MfE profile:
[Credentials Tab]
Username: username@gmail.com
Password: [self_explanatory]
Domain: google (this cannot be left blank)
[Connection Tab]
Exchange server: m.google.com
Secure connection: Yes
Access point: [S60 3rd Edition, select your wireless 3G/GPRS connection, or if your WiFi connection. S60 5th Edition, select your Destination that includes both your wireless 3G/GPRS AP and WiFi, and sort WiFi with higher priority.]
Sync while roaming: [Choose the appropriate one according to your plan.]
Use default port: Yes
Now, you can enable Email, Calendar and Contacts in other tabs.
Go to Sync schedule tab, and select one of the following choices: Manual, Always on, 15 min, 30 min, 1 hr, 4 hr or 12 hr.
Go to your S60 home screen, or go to your S60 messaging app, and select Mail for Exchange. Click on Options > Synchronize. Wait...
Voila!!!!!
Got it set up, synced folders just fine, tested sending and receiving email. Not working yet, about five mins, MobileMe -> GmaiL/about 5 mins,

ReplyDeleteOf course, we Nokia/SE (S60) users are in the same predicament as the WinMo/iPhone users... ActiveSync only supports one profile. Not multiple. So in my case, I have to choose either GMail or my company mail.
ReplyDeleteUntil Nokia makes improvements to MfE to support multiple EAS profiles, I think I'm going to stick with my corporate mail, and just use the native mail app and access GMail using IMAP.
At least it works on S60!!! =)
Any way to change the "from" address on the iphone? I have my company email address set for gmail on the web. Don't see that as a default here...

ReplyDelete-Old mail doesn't show up in "Inbox", even with 'no limit' exchange setting on iPhone
-[GMAIL] tree and all labels are displayed in the Mail app with no way to hide them. With IMAP, I successfully removed this noise with IMAP prefix set to [GMAIL] on my iPhone. With Exchange, there is no equivalent way to maintain this Mail app folder view with the limited iPhone and 0 web gmail settings.
I switched back to a IMAP and the gpush solution due to these issues.

Sent first test e-mail, no push notification after waiting for 5 minutes. This is after loading the web interface and seeing the e-mail there to make sure it sent.
Went into mail, message loaded very quickly.
Sent another test message -- yet to see a push notification for it; been about 5-10 min now.

ReplyDeleteTurned on the Exchange system (had been using IMAP) ... all seemed to be working as I noticed that my test msg resulted in an updated new-mail count at the home screen within a minute or so--cool!
ReplyDeleteHowever deleting mail from an alternate source did not result in an updated (decreased) mail count on the home screen within 15 mins... and there seemed to be a not-insignificant delay when opening mail and actually seeing the new mail (vs. the previous amt of time required to grab new mail via IMAP).
Given all that I'll just stick to IMAP and 15 or 30-min Fetch for the moment.
On my iPhone, I've been using it to get my Gmail for a long time already using the iPhone mail app. How is this push thing using Google Sync better? (I'm already using Sync to get my contacts and calendar)

I set everything back up, and now none of my contacts are coming back. A few of my emails have come through VERY slowly but no contacts or calender data......

Just set this up and it's horribly slow!!! Please add more servers as quickly as possible. It's taking 10 mins for me to get a push notification when a new email arrives...also can't view any other folder other than the Inbox!

ReplyDeleteGreat in theory, horrid in practice. The slowness may just be server overload due to the sudden influx of rabid iPhoners, but test messages are taking 10+ minutes to push, phone-side deletes are taking 20+ minutes to register in the web interface, and my mailbox repeatedly failed its initial sync attempt. Haven't been able to load any unpushed boxes (e.g. Sent) successfully yet. At this point, using IMAP and pulling seems more practical, which is sort of sad.

My contacts are starting to come through, 50 at a time like every 10 minutes or so. The email is still not working worth a darn, hasn't synched up my folders or anything....I'm okay with it though, I think, like others have mentioned, once the bajillion gmail users get all synched up things will start to return to normal..

I'm sure it's because everyone in the world is turning this feature on and the servers are being taxed. I'd give it a few days before the push feature is up to speed.
Give it some time and everything will be uploaded just fine.

I have a windows mobile phone and I had my contacts and calender syncing with Google Sync via active sync before. Today, I tried using Google sync for email, and it just seems like it gets pushed slowly. I waited for about 7 minutes to get an email pushed. I used to use SEVEN and I got it within a minute or so. Anyhow, I hope its just the servers being overloaded...

GPush has also supported push with blackberries (as blackberries are natively 'push' devices). I've had google sync on my phone for a very long time, and all my emails are pushed instantly. In fact, if I'm sitting there refreshing my gmail on my comp (did this as a test), My phone will buzz BEFORE it shows up on the computer most of the time. Simply amazing. No other phone like it.
For some reason activating this had the following affects:

b. phone became extremely hot.
c. charging the phone did not seem to actually work.

Although, two issues are making me hesitate:
The [Gmail] folder/label tree that allegedly one can't get rid of in Push Gmail (It can be done in IMAP, by adjusting the prefix), along with the alleged inability of hiding certain labels/folders to appear on the iPhone device.
And the second bummer for me is:

All in all, I'm still very excited and happy for the announcement. I'm just going to take my time and use push after I overlook its tiny thorns.
After I enabled the push Gmail on my iPhone, now my email is super slow to load, you do get the push email right the way, however it takes forever to load if you are able to load at all. Unlike other exchange emails, this thing really takes forever to even load.

The gmail exchange is very slow and it drains my battery because it is takes to long to sync. Also my older emails in my inbox does not show up even though I set sync to no limit. Good intentions by the Google team, but poor implementation. Disabled exchange for gmail and went back to imap. My calender and contacts still work fine. Please fix!

good work, yesterday I was speaking to the apple iphone support. because I already had activated push but didn't get my mail instantly. looking at my phone bill, I was not happy because my iphone connected every 15 minutes and I had to pay money for every connection. apple iphone support said googlemail does not support push service. and because of that reason, the iphone would connect every time to look for new mails.

MfE from Nokia really is not a very good client as a lot of you pointed out. I was extremely happy when I switched to Seven (beta program at Seven.Com). Till this day I am happily syncing contacts (gmail) and calendar (gmail) and get push mail (multiple accounts) without any problems.

Can someone explain how this would be different than the Gmail app that is currently available on my Blackberry? It seems to 'sync' perfectly with my online account, and I get notified of new Gmail just like I get notified of new corporate mail on my Blackberry. Am I missing something? I feel like I've had Gmail integration on my BB for years.

ReplyDeleteYou are wrong. You obviously don't know the intricacies and the long road that Gmail users on BIS have on, waiting for true, 2-way push.
Gmail users on BIS have had POP (1-way push) for years now, yes. But that's POP (much worse than IMAP). And it didn't synchronize anything at all.
Just a few months ago, RIM implemented IMAP push with one-way synchronization from BB to web in BIS version 2.7. We're still waiting for them to complete the process to 2-way; hence, WE WANT THIS ON OUR BLACKBERRYS.

Well I thought everything was working and I was in the clear but....
ReplyDeleteAll my contacts and all my calender events are synced (the good news) but the email is still pretty much fubar. Nevermind the fact that it's push email and still taking way to long to actually push - I can blame that on the rush of people (including me) turning this feature on and strangling the servers. However, my inbox appears to have the correct emails but all the other folders (roughly 70 or so) have no synced up to receive their respective emails. A few of the folders have a few of the emails but for the most part it isn't working at all. It appears to have nothing to do with time constraints because some email as young as a week old are not syncing up with the folder. I have the email configured to sync all email regardless of age but it doesn't seem to matter. It isn't as though the phone is having an error because it goes through the motions of checking email/etc but it just doesn't pull down the emails in the folders. I'm very frustrated...
I'm a Blackberry Tour owner. No support? I am sad and dissapointed, and bow my head in shame.
ReplyDeleteOne observation. When you delete items on your phone (at least on a WM Phone), it archives the email under "all mail".
ReplyDeleteWith IMAP, it didn't move the mail items to the trash, but at least it applied the "deleted items" label.
Any chance of updating this?
I hope the bugs are worked out soon and you guys move on to getting google sync to support multiple/shared calendars. Until then, I'll continue using nuevasync.com

I have been using IMAP connection on my humble Sony Ericsson mobile phone and it already does push-email for a long time? Works great, just as it should.

Seems the "search on server" is not working using the googles's exchange connector.

ReplyDelete1. Only sync last months of mails! and my iPhone is set to "no limit"
2. Deleting mails on the iPhone doesn't work correctly. After the mail is deleted it can't be found in the Trash on the iPhone or via the Gmail web interface. the only way to find the mail via search! when a mail is deleted the inbox label is removed.. but it does not get the Trash label!! the same thing when moving mails to trash folder..

This works on my E71; however, it is very slow compared with using SEVEN.
ReplyDeleteOn SEVEN I got the mail within seconds. On MFE using google sync it took over 5 mins then I got impatient and did a manual sync.
Also can't access my IMAP folders on MFE unlike SEVEN.
As a solution - Seven is hardly comparable. You have to install a client side app on your PC which must be running and connected to the internet to have the functionality you need. Pretty much useless in my opinion....

ReplyDeleteanyone notice the iphone count be doubled as compared to the actual unread msgs? yesterday this was working fine but last nite & this morning i'm noticed for every 1 unread msg in gmail, i have 2 on my phone (the # indicator on the mail icon)...when i go into the mail app its only showing 1. i only have about a dozen msgs in my inbox so i'm not missing anything i believe...

I love having my contacts baced up. I'm about to purchase the New HTC Touch Pro 2 for Sprint and seeing as how I use my gCalendar to set appointments, gContacts to keep all my numbers & my gMail to keep in touch w/ everyone, this just made my business day!!!

Message would show in the web interface and not in the iPhone app, also for some reason when I do go in to the inbox all the messages would be gone then would reapear with a download. Push did not work at all this morning, even manual refresh doesnt show messages.
ReplyDeleteMessages will not delete from iPhone. When i try to delete I get message "Unable to Move Message The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash."

ReplyDelete1. Push over Active Sync is way to flacky at the moment.
2. Even if it worked fine, I am not sure if I want my battery to last 6 hours per day on my iPhone 3G.
Nevertheless, thank you very much for the effort and the services you provide.
I sync my calendar and contacts to apps gmail and stick to imap for mails so far since I am fine with fetching mails every 15 mins on my device.

ReplyDeleteI've been syncing contacts and calendar to my phone for months, but with my Apps for Domains email account, I'm unable to turn on email without ActiveSync failing, yielding the 0x800004005 error someone else mentioned above.
ReplyDeleteI turned on ActiveSync's verbose logging and am getting a <Status>8</Status> response to an INBOX:virtual query which search results would have me believe normally corresponds to a server misconfiguration.
I waited a bit to see if it might have just been load related, but it was still occurring in the middle of the night as well as today.
Tried using the google sync push email and had terrible results. Calendar and contacts have worked great but when I enabled email it would push email in 45seconds at best. My inbox did not download a lot of the email that had been opened like it does with IMAP. There was duplicate labels/folders created. I had 3 sent folders for some reason. Long story short I disabled google push and went back to IMAP gmail with the 3rd party application "Gpush" It's super fast, 1-2 second push notifications, displays the email sender and subject pop up. Much happier with Gpush!! Thank god for that App!!!

This does not help those of us who already use Exchange for our work email. That leaves my 2 gmail accounts on POP for the foreseeable future.

ReplyDelete@Ethan (or anyone who complained at Google for the one Exchange account limitation): That is not Google's problem. It's your device software problem. The native iPhone mail app with Exchange support, as well as Nokia's MfE application, is designed to only handle one EAS account/profile. This is a problem with the respective software. If you have an iPhone, take it up with Apple. If you have a Nokia, take it up with Nokia. If you absolutely need to set up multiple Exchange accounts, then currently the only offering is the Palm Pre, which supports multiple Exchange accounts.

ReplyDeleteTried putting in full gmail address e.g. "jonathanlee@gmail.com" and just the username "jonathanlee" into the Credentials section of the sync profile (earlier post from someone said just the username worked for them) but neither worked.
I've been using sync for calendar and contacts and it's worked great. I enable mail today. It's slow, but it sounds like a common complaint that's being addressed.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm dense, but what does this really buy me over IMAP? Sure, it's push. But when I check email on my iPod Touch I habitually press the "check mail" icon anyway. Okay, I might have to wait an extra 8 seconds for the very last messages to come across, but that's not a big deal to me.
Are there other reasons to use it?
I have 4 Gmail account (actually Googla Apps). Can I have push for all of them on my iphone?

ReplyDeleteBody Email can't display if there are email size bigger than Download size limit setting. If you want all email display properly, you should setting up Download size limit with All or Entire Message.

ReplyDelete@John Mayson: You can't set up Outlook to connect to the Exchange server for several reasons. A) Between GMail's servers and your device is this thing called Exchange ActiveSync. Consider this an API of some sort. B) You're assuming that GMail's mail servers are Microsoft Exchange. I'll bet that it is not, and probably something proprietary. They simply made it to work with EAS.
ReplyDeleteBut you can easily configure Outlook with IMAP. The moment you get an email, it shows up in Outlook. So you don't really need to "synchronize" since you're already being kept most up to date on server changes.

ReplyDelete@Johny Mayson: to use gmail with outlook in a proper way you just need to get the Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook (http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/outlook_sync.html). it's just 50$/ person/ year.
