Google Voice and Sprint integration is live

Cross-posted from the Google Voice Blog

It’s official, the Google Voice integration with Sprint is now live!

As we mentioned when we first announced the integration, there are two ways to bring Google Voice to your Sprint mobile phone:

Option 1: Keep your Sprint number: Your Sprint number becomes your Google Voice number so that when people call your Sprint mobile number, it rings all the phones you want.

Option 2: Replace your Sprint number with your Google Voice number: All calls made and texts sent from your Sprint phone will display your Google Voice number.

In both cases, Google Voice replaces Sprint voicemail and international calls made from the Sprint phone will be connected by Google Voice.

For detailed instructions on how to get started with either option, visit google.com/voice/sprint.

This integration is currently only available to Sprint customers in the United States.

  1. Does this new integration with Sprint also include Sprint's pre-paid subsidiaries (eg. Virgin Mobile, PayLo, Common Cents)?

I'm a Google Voice user as well as a customer of one of Sprint's pre-paid subsidiaries so I'm curious if this integration would extend to people like myself?

  2. Does this allow for MMS messages to a Google Voice number that replaces a Sprint number?

  3. Apparently this doesn't work if you're account isn't coded as "Individual." The problem is that any kind of employer discount on your Sprint account will change the account code.

    This sucks! Please fix.

    Here's a thread where it's being discussed:

  4. Exactly, i cannot enable this feature because i have a government discount on my line. This really sucks that Sprint requires you to have a plain account with no discounts, gov or credit union or employer discounts. Been waiting for this since they announced it. bummer!

  5. I am trying to do this, but it is asking for $20 to "port" my number to google voice. I did not see anywhere that there is a cost to do this.

  6. @W Fleishhacker

In Google Voice Settings under the "Phones" tab, there should be a link next to your Sprint line (you need to have already added it as a forwarding phone) that says "Check eligibility for Sprint integration".

Integration is done through that link.

  7. Is there a way we can get notifications for texts and voicemails to be seperate in the app? I want to use my phone's messages app for my texts but use Google Voice for voicemail.

  8. working like a breeze for me. they need to hurry up and put out a honeycomb voice app! i think you can do it if you're rooted but that isn't for me.

i really like that all my SMSs are going to be archived now. my friends are really funny so now i can star those drunken gems i get from time to time. maybe i should start myfriendsaredrunksandheresproof.blogspot.com

  9. Definitely hoping you'll post a follow-up as to whether this will extend to Virgin Mobile (if not in the very near future, when it's possible) -- they are selling boatloads of Android phones with their cheap/no-contract/unlimited offering and this would really be an awesome add-on.

  10. does not work, google site says contact Sprint, Sprint says it's google's fault When I click on link to check eligibility for Sprint Integration, get the following: "Unfortunately, Google Voice cannot be enabled on this Sprint phone. Please contact Sprint for more details as to why this cannot be enabled." Sprint says it's Google's fault

  11. I have been using Google Voice for sprint for a little over a week now. I have a discount from my work and had no problems setting it up. It has worked great as I can answer texts from my work computer (I like typing on a keyboard). Also, if you want MMS's they will go to your phones messaging app. You can send them from there as well. I would like to have MMS's sent to GV so I could just upload them to Picasa. If you want that functionality now just get the Backup to Gmail app and all your sent and received photos will go to your Gmail account. I love Google Voice.

  12. Question(s): if you decide to use your current Google Voice number as your main Sprint number, what happens to the Sprint number?

For instance, if someone calls my old Sprint number, will it still ring the phone? Is it silently "active?"

Also, if there's an emergency, will 911 be called through my old Sprint number or the Google Voice number?

These are some basic but necessary questions I have before committing to this seemingly cool service.

  13. To address an earlier question, I have Virgin Mobile and there is an integration link on my Google Voice settings page. Unfortunately when I click it I get a message saying Sprint can not integrate my account at this time. However, it seems like they might allow this for Virgin Mobile customers in the future.

  14. I chose to set my sprint# as my GV#, and had attached some other phone# with this GV#. Then if someone calls me on my sprint#, which is the same as GV# now, and I pick up from another phone (Home, work etc), does sprint charge for anytime minutes? If it is still a "sprint" number, then the answer should be "yes"; if it is already a "GV" number, then the answer should be "no". Which one is correct?

  19. How do I actually do a permanent port of my Sprint number to Google Voice now (with Sprint cancellation)? The integration option seem to override the ability to do a port.

  20. Watch out! Sprint overcharged me for using option 2.... Sprint considers Google a landline #. So it uses up all of your voice minutes!!!
