Introducing Gmail for mobile 2.0

As an engineer on the Gmail for mobile team, I use the Gmail client on my mobile phone all the time. Because of this, I'm always looking for ways to make it faster, more robust and easier to use. Today, we're thrilled to introduce Gmail for mobile version 2.0 for J2ME-supported and BlackBerry phones. Our focus for this version was to make the experience faster and more reliable. We rearchitected the entire client to push all the processing to the background, greatly improve the client-side caching scheme and optimize every bottleneck piece of code we came across.

So, what does this all mean for you?

Overall performance improvement: You should experience significant raw speed improvement, smoother scrolling, and no freezing.
Multiple accounts management: If you have both a Gmail and Google Apps email account, you can easily switch between them quickly. You will no longer have to use two different mobile apps to access personal and work emails.
Multiple mobile email drafts: You can save multiple email drafts in your mobile phone, so that you can pick and choose what you would like to send later.
Powerful shortcut keys: If you have a QWERTY phone, you can use shortcut keys. Hit 'z' to undo, 'k' to go to a newer conversation, and 'j' to go to an older conversation. See Menu/Help in the app for more shortcuts.
Basic offline support: Can't get a signal? Not a problem. You can compose and read your most recent emails even when there is no signal. Also, any outgoing messages will be saved in the outbox on your phone and sent automatically when you're back in coverage.

Also, Gmail for mobile 2.0 is available in over 35 languages now. Please note, though, that not all features are available for all phones.

Ally said...: Installed on my Touch Diamond (Windows Mobile 6). Set up a gmail address and a google apps address really easily. Couple of things:
* It hung after a few minutes
* Link in email opened IE not the default Opera browser
* Text is tiny - even when 'large font' is selected

Pagla said...: I just downloaded the new version to my Nokia 6131 and found that one of the most useful features is missing in this version.

In the earlier version (1.1.1?), I used to copy my long user name from my notes and paste it in the user id field while signing in - but this version doesn't even give me the option of pasting ANYTHING anywhere in the login screen - it seems to have blocked the user from even invoking the phone's menu while on this screen.

I already regret to having replaced my last version with this new but inconvenient version. Hope Google will realize this soon and correct this bug in a future update.; October 24, 2008 at 4:10 AM

Now that this is perfected, perhaps you guys could do something similar for the CALENDAR (layering the native phone local calendar app as a pseudo calendar on top perhaps?)

I don't like being perpetually signed-in on a mobile device between uses. A REALLY, REALLY bad idea unless you can do a remote wipe of your login details, etc., in case you lose it or someone steals it...

I now have to manually select "sign-out" every time before I close the app. An additional hassle.

(Indeed, with the capability to handle multiple accounts would be useful to have a "sign-out of all" option, or does that appear if one does have multiple accounts only?)

please bring back also the 7, 9 shorcuts on qwerty devices! I am fine with the new short cuts but do now to archive a mail i have to use the inner of the E90. Because the outer screen of the E90 is just a phone with just the numeric keys!

So if we could have both 7,7 delete, 9,9 archive besides the extra shortcuts we have now then we have best of both worlds.

Also how to get this one full screen? My previous gmail was fullscreen but i installed this one over the net and now it isnt fullscreen, thats a wast of space.

Attachments: Why cant i open attachments by the system, and currently gmail doesnt seem to make images smaller if i few them in gmail itself. (at least my previous versions counter did tell me that only a x number of bytes was transfered when opening an image, now i suddenly see over 1M)
When composing messages, also be able to attach an attachement..

Also now i have HIDE instead of Refresh, i know now gmail does refresh on its own, but that doesnt really be to instant (no push or imap idle). So i would like to refresh itself (better would be pretty instant push ofcourse :) ); October 25, 2008 at 3:58 AM

Jeremy Tan said...: I've been waiting for this for a long time, and it is so far working very well on my N95. There are a couple of minor glitches though. When you select a conversation with multiple messages, for some reason, the collapsed messages are highlighted instead of the last message. Also, the 7 and 9 shortcuts don't work from the conversation view unless you click Menu->More Actions. I assume the same goes for all the other shortcuts in the More Actions menu.

Complaint 1 was could not cut and paste into address field. This meant if you had an email address in blackberry contacts etc that wasn't in your Google contacts you had to paste it into the body of the message and then manually retype it into the address field. Im so happy this was finally addressed.

Complaint 2 was you could only do one draft at time which meant you could sometimes is and wait forever for gmail to send something and meanwhile you could not compose any further messages. Again addressed and am very happy.

On Blackberry Curve VZW 8330 OS 4.3.0127.

Wow Google does listen to all these posts

Addendum:
My only complaints revolve around size and push time: Font size and Icon Size. Font size in message view seems a little smaller or something seems different but could be my imagination. The blackberry icon is significantly smaller than the previous icon for gmail. it's kind of annoying as it has one of the smallest blackberry icons on my blackberry desktop. It's also not clear what they are trying to symbolize by tilting the icon 30 degree.

Finally I have been waiting to test receiving a message from blackberry to see how icon lights up. My thought was perhaps the icon gets a lot bigger or something like that. Refresh kind of defeats the purpose of the test. It would be nice if you could set how often gmail checks Google for new mail. Don't worry about me wearing by battery out. Is this thing turned on ? said...: V2.06 no long accepts the soft-selection key or selection button on my HTC 8525, like 1.5 did. It makes it incredibly inconvinient that for selecting individual emails ( or selecting menu items ), I have to move my thumb from the jog-dial/soft select button. Talk about incredible drop in usability.

When I'm reading / scanning long e-mails, my eyes have to hunt for the text while it's still moving and locking in place.

That concept works well on the iPhone, but not on a keyboard device such as my Nokia E51. It's driving me crazy enough that I'm considering downgrading back to gmail mobile v1.

Great work guys!

A couple of bugs on my N73:

¤ The "Loading..." progress bar almost always stays half full, except every 4th load, when it shows 3/4 full.
¤ When new mail arrives, the new mail count shows up at the top, but have to refresh to actually see the mail items.
¤ When composing a new mail, searching for contacts from "All contacts" starts processing, but then just stops without returning any results.

I suspect there might also be memory leaks, as my phones available memory keeps decreasing after each launch (exit, not hide). From experience with J2ME dev, static variables are sometimes not garbage collected upon shutdown...

You are probably aware of there issues and working on them as we speak.

I've found a temporary but working solution to the full screen issue in gmail mobile 2.0

You need to install the application from a modified .jad file; three lines in the original jad has to be changed in the following way

* UseNativeTextButtons: false
* ReverseSoftkeys: true
* UseNativeCommands: false

Then install from the jad and voila', it works full screen!

The original jad file can be downloaded from:

In the 1.5 version i could see loads of headers, read 5 or 8 emails and reply a few within 20Kb.
Now if there are a lot of new (compared to what 2.0 caches) 1 refresh cost me 30Kb and i didnt do anything yet
yes now reading mails are not that expensive but when i am not in my home country i dont read 80% of the mails,
i just look at the headers to know enough.

So my data usage is now way way up compared to the 1.5 version!
This is is because in 1.5 i had the option unchecked to download the messages, but that seems to be gone and i cant find
a way to turn that back on. Please google dont kill options that where working perfectly! Please give us back the option
to not download the complete messages when i do a refresh or when gmail does a auto refresh or starts up.

The only real new thing for me, i dont use multiply accounts and so on, is that it keeps the messages stored locally
so in theory this will result in much less bandwith then before. What i think is a bug is that when i start gmail
and it connects it doesnt sync the mail box what i have on disk with what there is now.. I have to do a refresh myself
to see it. Why is that?

Also after that please give us an option not to check every X minutes (that option is also missing what the interval is)
but give us also an option to use real push. I can do that now if i want to with gmail through imap (idle) when i use profimail
but i dont want that i like the threaded view and the quick archive/delete of those (and the lower bandwith that i had with the 1.5 version)
It should be possible for gmail to just have an open connection to the server and that the server just pushes the new headers (or tells
the client that it has something new and the client does a refresh then) That way we have really push!

What i also get now on certain mails is an error that i never had on 1.5:
Unexpected end of response, could not read in entire conversation

this is most of the time i think only on messages that are not threaded (so just 1 message)

The option we also should have is the notification. now it just vibrates once, but i dont like that to much i like to have a sound

1) When composing, only recent contacts auto-fill when addressing a message. If the contact I am emailing isn't recent I have to go into the Contacts and start the message by clicking their email address in the listing of "All Contacts". This doesn't work well when there are multiple recipients who are not recent. There should be a way to trigger a search of All Contacts directly from the To: field - kinda like Outlook has "Check Names".

2) You can't copy and paste from the Contacts. Nor can you map an address.

Otherwise, fantastic. Actually better than using IMAP on a Blackberry, even though it doesn't have real push, BIS is only triggered every 10-15 minutes anyway. The Refresh function used to be a single key, now I have to go through the menu. Similarly, when I compose a message, I have to go through the menu to get my contacts instead of them coming up automatically when I clicked the Address field.

I find both of these to be major steps backwards and I would really like the old layout back.

* Bug ridden - poor access point/socket connection handling leading to worse user experience, and broken compatibility on many devices
* Bandwidth - much heavier on bandwidth than before
* Replaced easy number based shortcuts with useless letter based shortcuts
* Can't find the delete, archive or report spam options
* Doesn't use Full screen mode anymore, so fits 20% less content in the screen for no good reason
* Application Icon is broken on S60 devices

bubbah said...: For older fones that won't run version 2, just get version 1 from someplace (like www.sourceforge.net) and put it on your fone (I have the Motorola RazrV3) and enter your email and password and tell the program to save that and stay logged in. Then, for another email, simply install a 2nd copy of the program and do the same thing. On the RazrV3 it requires that you rename the first one so it doesn't install over it (simply done using MotorolaMidletsManager downloadable free all over the place). For this, I am able to get my gmail for both accounts in seconds !! great !!; January 29, 2009 at 4:32 PM

The new gmail mobile gets stuck in the signin . and i cannot downgrade thru the http://m.google.com/app/gmail.jad?dc=gorganic&ver=vX.X.X as i recieve a java exeception for v1.0.0,v1.1.0,v1.5.0
