Introducing Gmail for mobile 2.0

Thursday, October 23, 2008 | 10:00 AM

As an engineer on the Gmail for mobile team, I use the Gmail client on my mobile phone all the time. Because of this, I'm always looking for ways to make it faster, more robust and easier to use. Today, we're thrilled to introduce Gmail for mobile version 2.0 for J2ME-supported and BlackBerry phones. Our focus for this version was to make the experience faster and more reliable. We rearchitected the entire client to push all the processing to the background, greatly improve the client-side caching scheme and optimize every bottleneck piece of code we came across.

So, what does this all mean for you?

  • Overall performance improvement: You should experience significant raw speed improvement, smoother scrolling, and no freezing.
  • Multiple accounts management: If you have both a Gmail and Google Apps email account, you can easily switch between them quickly. You will no longer have to use two different mobile apps to access personal and work emails.
  • Multiple mobile email drafts: You can save multiple email drafts in your mobile phone, so that you can pick and choose what you would like to send later.
  • Powerful shortcut keys: If you have a QWERTY phone, you can use shortcut keys. Hit 'z' to undo, 'k' to go to a newer conversation, and 'j' to go to an older conversation. See Menu/Help in the app for more shortcuts.
  • Basic offline support: Can't get a signal? Not a problem. You can compose and read your most recent emails even when there is no signal. Also, any outgoing messages will be saved in the outbox on your phone and sent automatically when you're back in coverage.
Also, Gmail for mobile 2.0 is available in over 35 languages now. Please note, though, that not all features are available for all phones.

Go to m.google.com/mail in your mobile browser to download the new Gmail for mobile for your phone.

Yep. I too have been running v2.0.5 since installing Google Mobile Apps a couple weeks ago. Just went to the download site and noticed that this is v2.0.6

News, and yet not news at the same time.

Ack! I installed it over my version 1.1 on my Razr, and now it won't run because I don't have enough memory.

Where can I d/load the legacy apps? I can't live w/out Gmail on my phone!

I had to delete the last line and one line close to the end of the .jad to get it to install on my Motorola i855. I'm sure that's how the Gmail team *doesn't* want people installing the product, but consumers have to improvise.

Installed on my Touch Diamond (Windows Mobile 6). Set up a gmail address and a google apps address really easily. Couple of things:
* It hung after a few minutes
* Link in email opened IE not the default Opera browser
* Text is tiny - even when 'large font' is selected

I'll be sticking to the native pop/imap email programme till it becomes more Windows Mobile 6 friendly.

I just downloaded the new version to my Nokia 6131 and found that one of the most useful features is missing in this version.

In the earlier version (1.1.1?), I used to copy my long user name from my notes and paste it in the user id field while signing in - but this version doesn't even give me the option of pasting ANYTHING anywhere in the login screen - it seems to have blocked the user from even invoking the phone's menu while on this screen.

I already regret to having replaced my last version with this new but inconvenient version. Hope Google will realize this soon and correct this bug in a future update.

Just installed the new app. on my Nokia N73 and E90. Hmm... Why has the option been removed to allow me to unselect "keep me signed in".

I don't like being perpetually signed-in on a mobile device between uses. A REALLY, REALLY bad idea unless you can do a remote wipe of your login details, etc., in case you lose it or someone steals it...

I now have to manually select "sign-out" every time before I close the app. An additional hassle.

(Indeed, with the capability to handle multiple accounts would be useful to have a "sign-out of all" option, or does that appear if one does have multiple accounts only?)

Please re-instate the option to allow me to by default NOT remain signed-in on app. exit. Thanks...

I couldn't download Traditional Chinese version of GMail from my Taiwanese Motorola E770 even if I choose language correctly.

Why don't you open the .jar file if you can't recognize language of cellphone?

jcompagner said...

a few points from me (maybe the are already mentioned above)

please bring back also the 7, 9 shorcuts on qwerty devices! I am fine with the new short cuts but do now to archive a mail i have to use the inner of the E90. Because the outer screen of the E90 is just a phone with just the numeric keys!

So if we could have both 7,7 delete, 9,9 archive besides the extra shortcuts we have now then we have best of both worlds.

Also how to get this one full screen? My previous gmail was fullscreen but i installed this one over the net and now it isnt fullscreen, thats a wast of space.

Attachments: Why cant i open attachments by the system, and currently gmail doesnt seem to make images smaller if i few them in gmail itself. (at least my previous versions counter did tell me that only a x number of bytes was transfered when opening an image, now i suddenly see over 1M)
When composing messages, also be able to attach an attachement..

Also now i have HIDE instead of Refresh, i know now gmail does refresh on its own, but that doesnt really be to instant (no push or imap idle). So i would like to refresh itself (better would be pretty instant push ofcourse :) )

I've been waiting for this for a long time, and it is so far working very well on my N95. There are a couple of minor glitches though. When you select a conversation with multiple messages, for some reason, the collapsed messages are highlighted instead of the last message. Also, the 7 and 9 shortcuts don't work from the conversation view unless you click Menu->More Actions. I assume the same goes for all the other shortcuts in the More Actions menu.

Otherwise great piece of work!m

Wow. All I can say is wow. Lightning fast and my two biggest complaints were addressed.

Complaint 1 was could not cut and paste into address field. This meant if you had an email address in blackberry contacts etc that wasn't in your Google contacts you had to paste it into the body of the message and then manually retype it into the address field. Im so happy this was finally addressed.

Complaint 2 was you could only do one draft at time which meant you could sometimes is and wait forever for gmail to send something and meanwhile you could not compose any further messages. Again addressed and am very happy.

On Blackberry Curve VZW 8330 OS 4.3.0127.

Wow Google does listen to all these posts

Addendum:
My only complaints revolve around size and push time: Font size and Icon Size. Font size in message view seems a little smaller or something seems different but could be my imagination. The blackberry icon is significantly smaller than the previous icon for gmail. it's kind of annoying as it has one of the smallest blackberry icons on my blackberry desktop. It's also not clear what they are trying to symbolize by tilting the icon 30 degree.

Finally I have been waiting to test receiving a message from blackberry to see how icon lights up. My thought was perhaps the icon gets a lot bigger or something like that. Refresh kind of defeats the purpose of the test. It would be nice if you could set how often gmail checks Google for new mail. Don't worry about me wearing by battery out. Id like control to set the interval.

I don't want to "beat the dead horse" but seriously, when will this be made available for Windows Mobile? Microsoft is a significant player in the Smartphone industry and Google seems to just ignore that fact.

I have been an avid gmail mobile user since it first came out and I love everything else about the new application, except... Smoother scrolling!

When I'm reading / scanning long e-mails, my eyes have to hunt for the text while it's still moving and locking in place.

That concept works well on the iPhone, but not on a keyboard device such as my Nokia E51. It's driving me crazy enough that I'm considering downgrading back to gmail mobile v1.

Bottom line, smooth scrolling should be disable-able in settings.

things i dislike:

otherwise it's pretty cool. also, it tends to start up heavier after a few weeks (takes up to 2 minutes), problem is solved after reinstall.

Have been waiting for an update to this application for a while now!

Great work guys!

A couple of bugs on my N73:

¤ The "Loading..." progress bar almost always stays half full, except every 4th load, when it shows 3/4 full.
¤ When new mail arrives, the new mail count shows up at the top, but have to refresh to actually see the mail items.
¤ When composing a new mail, searching for contacts from "All contacts" starts processing, but then just stops without returning any results.

I suspect there might also be memory leaks, as my phones available memory keeps decreasing after each launch (exit, not hide). From experience with J2ME dev, static variables are sometimes not garbage collected upon shutdown...

You are probably aware of there issues and working on them as we speak.

Once again, thanks for an awesome product!

Hi all,
I've found a temporary but working solution to the full screen issue in gmail mobile 2.0

You need to install the application from a modified .jad file; three lines in the original jad has to be changed in the following way

* UseNativeTextButtons: false
* ReverseSoftkeys: true
* UseNativeCommands: false

Then install from the jad and voila', it works full screen!

The original jad file can be downloaded from:
http://m.google.com/app/gmail.jad?dc=gorganic&ver=v2.0.6

Hope it helped.

Is it just me?? What am I missing here? I have gmail set up through my BIS and it works fine, especially on 4.5 with HTML email enabled but since Google seems to always get things right I decided to try this app.

While I really like the UI and the quickness of the Gmail app and being able to easily switch between accounts I don't understand the lack of html support and the inability to click on any links in an email. Is there some setting I'm missing? I can't imagine the thinking behind not being able to click on links . . . . . .

@alpergo you are the man!

Its fullscreen and even better i have the 7,8,9 shortcuts back :)

Ok i did loose the qwerty keyboard shortcuts but i rather have the old then the new onces because the E90 has 2 modes and i use the front also for reading, and not being able to archive quickly was quite annoying.

thx again.

I'm curious. Am I the only one who is unable to click on hypeelinks in my gmail or am I just the only one this doesn't bother?

jcompagner said...

david: links seems to be a mystery. some links work just fine others dont. It seems to be that the link must really be a link as text. So http://xxx must be the text.
If it is a link with a label then it wont work.

David Smith said...

Ahhhh. Thanks kcompagner. I see. I thought since I hadn't seen it mentioned anywhere else I was missing something.

That's a deal breaker for me. Maybe that will hey fixed down the road?.

Installed it on my P1i over the older version, works great! The only thing I had to do manually was replace the old shortcut icon on the stand-by menu.

The application seems to respond pretty slow on my windows mobile 6 HTC Touch (Getting data from the server is fast), think I will stick with IMAP in Mobile outlook for now..

Hi, Thanks for another great release!
Some notes:

- I need to login to my native gmail account before I can login to my google apps account
- fonts way too small on WinMobile VGA device (even with large fonts enabled)

Please Please Please, provide a native Windows Mobile version finally!!!! Always going through this Java engine is terrible.

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Love, just love, the multiple account management feature. I have 3 active Google mail accounts and till now, had to access 2 from my web browser and 1 from my earlier version of the GMail app.

Am also loving the 'Hide' feature that minimises the app.

Would it be possbile to add a "Back to Inbox" links at the bottom of each e-mail msg in the mobile version of Gmail. It drives me crazy that I have to go back to the top to get to the "Inbox" link! Thanks, Tom

jcompagner said...

i have been using the 2.0 version for a while now and i dont get it why do people think it is faster?
I dont think it is faster. and if it is then i guess its only faster because it downloads all the messages upfront
In the 1.5 version i could see loads of headers, read 5 or 8 emails and reply a few within 20Kb.
Now if there are a lot of new (compared to what 2.0 caches) 1 refresh cost me 30Kb and i didnt do anything yet
yes now reading mails are not that expensive but when i am not in my home country i dont read 80% of the mails,
i just look at the headers to know enough.

So my data usage is now way way up compared to the 1.5 version!
This is is because in 1.5 i had the option unchecked to download the messages, but that seems to be gone and i cant find
a way to turn that back on. Please google dont kill options that where working perfectly! Please give us back the option
to not download the complete messages when i do a refresh or when gmail does a auto refresh or starts up.

The only real new thing for me, i dont use multiply accounts and so on, is that it keeps the messages stored locally
so in theory this will result in much less bandwith then before. What i think is a bug is that when i start gmail
and it connects it doesnt sync the mail box what i have on disk with what there is now.. I have to do a refresh myself
to see it. Why is that?

Also after that please give us an option not to check every X minutes (that option is also missing what the interval is)
but give us also an option to use real push. I can do that now if i want to with gmail through imap (idle) when i use profimail
but i dont want that i like the threaded view and the quick archive/delete of those (and the lower bandwith that i had with the 1.5 version)
It should be possible for gmail to just have an open connection to the server and that the server just pushes the new headers (or tells
the client that it has something new and the client does a refresh then) That way we have really push!

What i also get now on certain mails is an error that i never had on 1.5:
Unexpected end of response, could not read in entire conversation

this is most of the time i think only on messages that are not threaded (so just 1 message)

The option we also should have is the notification. now it just vibrates once, but i dont like that to much i like to have a sound

by the way, all the settings that the jad file gives us should be just configurable in the ui.

I have a couple frustrations with Gmail for Mobile 2.0.

1) When composing, only recent contacts auto-fill when addressing a message. If the contact I am emailing isn't recent I have to go into the Contacts and start the message by clicking their email address in the listing of "All Contacts". This doesn't work well when there are multiple recipients who are not recent. There should be a way to trigger a search of All Contacts directly from the To: field - kinda like Outlook has "Check Names".

2) You can't copy and paste from the Contacts. Nor can you map an address.

3) Attaching files would be a nice feature.

Are plans in the works for a Gmail Windows Mobile APPLICATION rather than a Java program?

I LOVE IT!

I can't live without Gmail and having such an excellent solution for the BlackBerry is great. And its free!

It would be absolutely perfect if you could push email instead of polling every 15 minutes, add a feature to show the new mail count when the accounts menu is pulled up and to allow the option to select a label for a message.

Thank you Google!

Why is the search box at the bottom of the page?!?! Move it to the top where it belongs please.

Gmail for iPhone is great. But there needs to be a link to the Inbox at the bottom of reading a message. As it is, if I read a long message and get to the bottom, I don't have the option to go back to the inbox to select what message I want to read. Instead, I can click through "Newer" and "Older" links, but that could take a long time when I have a lot of mail. Or I can scroll all the way back up, but that takes a while with my finger on the phone.

Please, add an "Inbox" link at the bottom of the Gmail iPhone app!!

Thanks,
tony

Needs an option to disable prompting for message deletion as well as the ability to select multiple at once for mass deletion or archiving.

Otherwise, fantastic. Actually better than using IMAP on a Blackberry, even though it doesn't have real push, BIS is only triggered every 10-15 minutes anyway. The BB infrastructure doesn't keep constant contact to IMAP or POP servers, it just polls them every so often and then pushes THAT down to the phone... so the phone saves a little battery, but it's not really going to be any quicker via BIS "push" than with the GMail Mobile app.

PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEE..... make the Gmail Mobile App a signed application, just like Google maps for mobile. It doesn't work in Motorola V8 just because the application isn't signed.

hyderabadi said...

I think you have to intriduce the feature like PIN to access the Gmail Application. Because there is no security for the data if the mobile is lost.

AB said...

It's not like that. Actually, the application gets installed, but when I sign in "Loading..." is shown on the top right corner. Nothing happens after this.
On the other hand Google Maps works fine.
Only difference that I could find is that Google Maps is signed App where as Gmail App is not and I am pretty sure that if the Gmail App is signed it will work in every mobile, including mine

Hi Folks,

Just installed version 2 and I have to say I really miss two functions.
The Refresh function used to be a single key, now I have to go through the menu. Similarly, when I compose a message, I have to go through the menu to get my contacts instead of them coming up automatically when I clicked the Address field.

I find both of these to be major steps backwards and I would really like the old layout back.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks

The new version looks nice, but I don't understand why on my HTC S620 I now have to use the number 5 key as my selection key, instead of the selection/enter key on the keypad. Seems like a minor thing, but it's extremely frustrating...

Mircea said...

What... you deleted the application already? Where is it? I only move in circles and nowhere a download link. What's happened?

Mircea said...

Yeah... nevermind the silly question above - my new Motorola monster pack does not recognize the extension. You had to switch from .jar to .jad, didn't ya... anyway, I had it last week and did not like it too much (fonts too big for my taste) so I'm trying the 1.5 now. Which also seems not to respond very well to commands (up and down in the menus) so I think I'll get back to v.1.0. I'm used to that one. Good job, anyway.

S said...

Have been using this for a week and particularly like the speed improvement. The only disappointment is after I click reply to an email, I really wish I could see the text of the original email while I'm typing the new reply email, so I can reference back to it. Old version showed 1 line of original text (not enough), this new version shows none of original text. If bandwidth is the problem, it would help even if I could only see the previous 4-5 lines of text.

Can't be bothered to go back to my old moby where this worked fine so I guess I'll have to transfer from google mail to windows live. Pity. Gmail has a lot going for it apart from the fact that they never reply to blogs and comments!

I have another one here that didnt happen in 1.5: If i reply on an email and then do archive, the mail isnt archived/removed from my inbox i have to do that again in my inbox

Is there any way this could work on the Samsung Rant? I I really miss haveing this app on my cell phone and Sprint's alternative isn't nearly adequate.

There are some big defects in this version of Gmail for Mobile. Two the biggest are:

1. The adding new contacts by Gmail for Mobile is impossible

2. When we are creating mail lenght of message has limited and we cannot write longer mails (we can only receiving longer mails)

Disco Damon said...

Is there any possibility this will be able to run on the Samsung Rant soon?

sorry, this version seems much worse on my SE K850i - slow to load mail and almost unusable for browsing through messages when it is downloading.

it seems gmail mobile only displays plain text as hyperlinks, and converts html to plain text. weird and really annoying. until they fix it, i've discovered if you forward the email containing the link to yourself, the forwarded message will be converted to plain text and you can use the link. not at all practical, but useful in case of "emergencies."

Not as good as first version.

Problems in v2:

* Bug ridden - poor access point/socket connection handling leading to worse user experience, and broken compatibility on many devices
* Bandwidth - much heavier on bandwidth than before
* Replaced easy number based shortcuts with useless letter based shortcuts
* Can't find the delete, archive or report spam options
* Doesn't use Full screen mode anymore, so fits 20% less content in the screen for no good reason
* Application Icon is broken on S60 devices

Suggest you change it back!!!

I have sony ericsson c905, and got the "Invalid Application" error when tried installing via link.

The workaround is to dial the address to jar file directly, and run it on your phone (or d/l jar file on your pc and transfer it to the phone).

The link is

If you have an older phone which does not meet memory requirement for the new version, you can download 1.x version of the app here: m.google.com/app/v1.1.0/L1/gmail-g.jar or here: m.google.com/app/v1.5.0/L1/gmail-g.jar

thanks! ...but, older version doesn't support remembering multiple accounts which is an annoyance so severe as to make me wonder if I did the right thing selecting gmail as my email spot after over 15 years with *@att.net ...I am flummoxed by their inattention to such an issue as this...and, since there are other more complex items on my fone, and since midp2 java apps should reach any platform capable device, I think it is a faulty memory reporting widget in the app that stops it for no good reason...I have version 1.5 which is OK on my fone, thanks!

The lack of seeing the original text when replying on mobile gmail is a real deal breaker. It seems so fundamental to composing emails (quoting sections, deleting old stuff, copying additional email addresses, etc.) that I can't understand why it's missing (at least as an option).

1. Icon needs to be changed back to previous version.
2. Needs to check for new mail after opening app (give us the option)
3. Needs option for frequency of checking for new mail.
4. Shortcut key for refresh?

multiple account feature is a good idea... getting better...keep it up. Thanks.

Does anyone have a working download link to the jad file? Still getting the Error 404 - Not found message, even with a download manager. Thanks! :)

bubbah said...

For older fones that won't run version 2, just get version 1 from someplace (like www.sourceforge.net) and put it on your fone (I have the Motorola RazrV3) and enter your email and password and tell the program to save that and stay logged in. Then, for another email, simply install a 2nd copy of the program and do the same thing. On the RazrV3 it requires that you rename the first one so it doesn't install over it (simply done using MotorolaMidletsManager downloadable free all over the place). For this, I am able to get my gmail for both accounts in seconds !! great !!
