Introducing Nexus One

Tuesday, January 5, 2010 | 10:29 AM

We're very excited about today's launch of Nexus One, the newest Android-powered phone running the latest Android 2.1 software. Nexus One comes with all your favorite Google Mobile apps pre-installed: find the classics like Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube and Google Talk, with additional goodies like Maps Navigation and Google Voice. With its 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ chipset, these apps are speedier than ever before.

Additionally, Nexus One has a few cool new features like a voice-enabled keyboard for any text field; this way, you can speak to your phone and it does the text messaging, email writing, or search querying for you. Try adding the new YouTube widget to one of the five customizable home screen panels to quickly access the videos you want with just a few clicks. Explore your Picasa Web Albums with the 3D interface of the new Cooliris Gallery application. With Nexus One's 3.7" AMOLED display, your videos, apps, and photos are larger, clearer, and sharper.

I have heard that Google will start marketing their own iPhone. I hope that is true - better deals will happen that way.

Thanks Google, as always, we're the last for all.

Such a shame I dont live in the announced countries .

I fail to see teh reason why companies do this slow regional thing. Apple did this with the first sodding iPhone, Microsoft have done it with the Zune. Kills my enthusiasm and leads me to buy a competitive product.

Would love this phone, but Google wont let me. Shame.

T-Mobile employees have to buy the phone at the unlocked price if they want one. Doubleplus ungood, Google.

Why can't I buy an unlocked phone in Canada?

Craig said...

I'd buy it today if it was 3G on AT&T's network. I was never that impressed w/ iPhone and have been a holdout for this since Google introduced Android.

I have waited for this phone for along time now and was relay happy now and went on to the phone page to order one, but... "Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country." looks like i will have my rubbish SE W595 for ever now;) please bring it to Sweden ASAP

You can't buy the gadget in third world countries, Timbuktu, Kongo, Zaire, Zimbabwe, Germany and the rest of the EU yet!

Anybody knows when it will be available in those countries? ....especially Germany.

Unknown said...

So, what about Germany and other countries??

Not available in Australia...

I hope Canada gets the Nexus One soon.

Hey, why are you giving preferential treatment to Americans? I'm sure they don't love Google as much as we do :-)

(and just when I needed a new phone, too. I don't get this restriction at all.)

RTC said...

Google apparently does not like all of America either. If you have an existing family Share Plan, you cannot get the phone at the carrier price. I have a unlimited family plan with a G1 and a MyTouch on it and I too am not going to pay $500.00 for a new phone and still be locked into a contract. To me this feels as if Google has just gone over to the dark side with Apple, MS and Oracle. I got the G1 when it came out and I have been waiting for Google to "reward" early Android adopters with a phone like this for some time and I feel they have just screwed us all over. This is enough to make me say forget the Android and go to the iPhone when my T-Mo contracts are up.

so all these weeks i been showing so much pride in google and super excited about the nexus one...so guess what happens today when i am ready to place order with my credit card. i even missed work...to be one of the first...hey its not available in my country...which is CANADA i dun care if i cant get 3g or a discounted price with any providers down here. i wanted the phone unlocked! but guess what no words...so many people are complaining about the availability in Canada but google has no response as of yet. Google got supporters all over but they arent being caring enough. I am so down right now is that !@#$%^&*()*^%$#$^* anyway. maybe in couple of days, weeks, months it will be available once again why are we left behind. why is it the americans has to get it before. why not show some equality your f******g neighbouring country... we are like couple of hours drive from usa yet are left behind. anyway google is not living upto expectation anymore... i love google but today disappointed me.... i hope ERIC reads this and thinks there are alot of google lovers in canada then there is in usa.

Unknown said...

very disappointed too in france...which is the first european market for apple/iphone...i guess apple will keep its advantage for 2010...how can googgle, a major actor of the www launch a product on only few markets? very very disappointed of this strategy...it seems like the "google revolution" has stopped today...

Craig B said...

Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country....
HA HA.. i guess it's a new blackberry or iphone for me.. thanks for the easy decision google!

Unknown said...

What a huge disappointment for all Android lovers in Spain too. I followed the press event online and was ready to order as soon as the Google Nexus One page became available. The "Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country." is an insult after all the hype. Google should have been able to arrange a global launch.

nrathdor said...

What a pity. As one of those who waited for a more or less good-looking android phone I am quite disappointed. Hoped it would be a global launch since google want to sell it over the web...

The bad thing is that I need a phone now for mine is defective. Well, I am still waiting till the end of January... :( But I guess I have to buy one of their competitor.

Best regards from Switzerland.

Nate said...

Multitouch Please :)

mwiththeat said...

Google, You create great software but you need to learn from the operators about selling devices to the public.

One - Google checkout has bee failing for a lot of people (esp UK based people) Where is the telephone customer service for your customers?

Two - People want to hold and feel the device before deciding if they are going to leave their existing operator and sign up to a two year deal. Where is your retail presence?

Great device but poor customer service

Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country. (Germany)

I was ready to place order but not ready to wait until spring 2010 because there will be other "Superphones" announced... At least Google should distribute the unlocked N1s globally.

Unknown said...

Can anyone tell me what the problem would be shipping the unlocked phone to other countries? Instead of putting the package into a plane to London, you choose the plane to Paris, Berlin, Tokyo,... No big deal IMHO.

ArchieIndian said...

Just wanted some clarification on 2 or 3 things.

1. When will the Nexus One be available in India?
2. When will atleast Google Voice be available in India
3. When is the motorola version coming out?

Unknown said...

"Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country."

incoming iphone...

jb said...

I was hoping you had convinced a company to sell data only connections, and your new phone had VOIP implemented into Google Voice. I'd like to have a wireless data signal that powers my phone and my computers...one bill for about $50-75. Until that is done, your new phone is simply an iphone competitor and a let down for me. If you're not planning to do that, then consider making a phone with the latest and greatest technology that is for calls only and not text/web. I imagine battery life could be outstanding on a phone with the latest technology that doesn't have a fancy display, wi-fi, bluetooth, & gps.

"Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country."

I am really disappointed. i'm using google services now for many many years and i was always happy how progressively google has been. Now?! Some mail-sync stuff only for "business customers", big phone rumour then release only in some countrys and so on.. like someone mentioned before i think google is on the wrong track..

Glenn O said...

I am also looking forward to the Nexus one debuting in Germany. I've scoured the Internet but wasn't able to find even a tenative availability date!

Unknown said...

Is there really a problem if you get the unlocked phone in "unsopported" countries?, i will have to do what i did with the app engine aproval, call a friend in us and ask him to do the stuff for me and then bill/help me with the shipping, but i heard i might have issues using the phone 3G in my country (Colombia)... any word official post about this?

Ali Alani said...

I'm sure we'll get it next ... viva NEW ZEALAND! :)

The "PinDian" said...

Even here in Taiwan its unavailable. Gosh I so hate this move by google. I've been waiting for this phone and this is what I get... "Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country." This I think is complete BS. :-(

E.M.T. said...

Google, you are the biggest disappointment. Thanks a lot for not sharing your iPhone competing technology with Canada...I recently had an HTC magic and loved the fact that it was a Google phone...but I'm forced to replace it, so now, you have made my decision easy as I am purchasing an iPhone 3G s. You made a bad decision in not making the Nexus One available in Canada.

(Australia)

WTH Google. I want an unlocked phone, why do I need to wait? I'm sick of all this "not available in your country" BS.

"Web meets phone"

Well apparently you have forgotten what "Web" is short for, it's called WORLD WIDE web. Try again, what you meant to say was "USA Intranet meets phone".

Blocking out the rest of the world when you don't need to because you think you think it will get you more money, guess what...

that's EVIL!

Juanjux said...

"Sorry, the Google Hype One is not available in your country". (Spain)

Oh well, I was waiting to buy this phone because recently mine's screen broke, but I'll buy another one from some European company which doesn't consider the non-english speaking world "the rest of the world". The N900 looks pretty cool and it's truly open source, unlike the "don't distribute all the included apps or we'll sue you to hell"-sourced Android.

Stefan Matei said...

"Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country."

Juanjux said...

Jean-Marie,

The most probably reason for Google not selling the unlocked phone outside these countries is because they (or HTC) are negotiating the terms of the non unlocked versions with Vodafone and other operators. These operators will be totally opposed to an unlocked version being sold, they want to keep the hype until they can lock some users done.

That is, this is not the "revolution on phone distribution" we've been hearing about but the old mafious ways the mobile industry has been always working.

Lev said...

Not available at the discounted price if you have T-Mob family plan. Hmmm.

Ryan Singer said...

The discounted price is actually not that good of a deal. If you look at the plans on the T-Mobile website, if you pay full price for the phone, there is no contract and the price per month is only $59/month for the same plan.

Basically, you pay an extra $20/month for 24 months if you accept the $350 subsidy. You can do the math there.

Sybrand said...

Canada! Bring it to Canada pleeeeeease!

Esra Şimşek said...

I think it will came to so many country by Vodafone soon. But i hope it will sell the same price

Glenn O said...

I always thought that Google was an innovative enterprise; not just another shortsighted company. I'm afraid they've botched a great chance to secure a healthy chunk of the world market with their think-in-the-box launch of Nexus One.

Stefan said...

I want to order a Nexus One. --> "Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country."

When could we buy it in Austria or Germany?? (without contract)

Amazing, most comments are about the thing not being available outside of the USA. WAKE UP GOOGLE...it's a global economy and the rest of the world exists, has money and wants to spend it on your product. What is with the xenophobia?

Unknown said...

I think there wont be any reaction to this comments

Gerry said...

I agree Gianni, Google is too big to notice 50 comments all saying the same thing. :( If it was 2000 then we might hear a little well written excuse, but they still wouldn't change how they treat the other 199 countries of the world as second class to the US of A. :(

Is there any release schedule for the rest of the world?..There are a lot of people waiting in Mexico

Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country.

WWW = World Wide Web. Nice "openness".

Bing and Iphone, here i come.

William Bonnaud Dowell said...

@andrie - Bing app on iPhone is US only... I hate regional barriers but they're everywhere - just like the Zune.

Unknown said...

It's like i remember from my childhood in a communist country:
"We can't sell you that from the window, it's the last one we got. And if people don't see it there they're gonna think we don't have it to sell..."

Google keeps trying really hard to catch up with Microsoft's reputation.

Unknown said...

the good news is the nexus could be multitouch in europe, according to engadget...it might be worthing waiting a couple of week...

Gerry said...

multitouch in Europe is nothing to do with waiting, the nexus one can already do multitouch it's just not enabled because Apple has a BS patent for it in the US:

Can't imagine why companies launch their devices in this staggered way. Look at Nokia.. They launch their phones globally! Unless of course, it's a regional model. But this stuff is senseless. A great phone, designed for global use, and yet.. Restricted launch zones!

Why would I _wait_ for this phone this if Sony or LG or Nokia launch a comparatively on-par or better phone at twice the price in my region? Bah!

http://news.nexus-one.co.uk/post/329073525/how-to-get-your-hands-on-a-nexus-one-if-you-live

and stop complaining :D

Gerry said...

If anything ever goes wrong with your phone and you have used the above method to acquire your nexus one in a region where that particular model was not sold, then good luck getting a replacement or any support. Also if Google ever decides to update the software to block long term use of the phone outside of the area where it's sold, then good luck again. They don't even need to do this purposefully, they could just release some software to your phone that assumes you are in a certain region of the world.

Being in a special case of technology owners is NEVER a good idea unless you like having problems with said device.

Anybody who is asking us to stop complaining is clearly living in one of the selected countries or doesn't want a Nexus One. Yes there are ways around the website restriction, but that is not the point and will lead to problems anyway.

Unknown said...

Why leaving Canadian fans left out :( Let us buy Nexus One, I would so pay the full price of $600 :(

over9000 said...

The Nexus isn't available anywhere outside the US, Americans get it first cause they invented the damn thing.

Durjoy(PGSEM-2007) said...

Talking about making Nexus available all across the globe, I feel that customization would be a key success factors. Certain markets like the US may have high data usage while certain developing/emerging countries may have very low data and relatively high voice usage. So having diffrent flavors of similar applications for diffrent markets may be prudent. There are cultural diffrences also that Google paobably needs to take care of.

rusty said...

"Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country."

Thanks for making my descision of which phone to buy much easier, guys.

And as a developer, thanks for making it easy to descide which platform to aim for thanks to your credit card query/refund rules. This "five dollar surcharge" idiocy cripples the very people you're trying to lure from iPhone app development.

L. Filip said...

So, finally we have a phone who beats Iphone on every important level. Uhh..., nope we do not have it. Cant buy it. For me was the same with Iphone. I wanted to buy it the afternoon of the launch, but I was told I have to wait 2 weeks for it. After some mental "complimets" to Apple and T-Mobile, I bought a Samsung Omnia HD.
Now my wife need a phone. Which one it will be...? Well, we will see.

Logan said...

No keyboard and a touch-based interface... I'll pass.

Put out an Android-powered device with a keyboard and non-touch-based interface (like most BlackBerry devices!) and I would probably make the switch TOMORROW!

But none of this touch-screen rubbish...

Unknown said...

Several sources claim ( http://bit.ly/8tjBGd ), that the sales of the nexus one are not so strong compared to the Droid e.g. . Maybe is time to roll it out in more european countries.

Hopefully the customers service issue is solved, the legal issues and hopefully a lower price-cap below 400 Euro with VAT to be more competitive.

iSupply claims ( http://bit.ly/8HR02Z) that the material costs are $ 174,15, without R&D, patens and ad.

Therefore a price-cap of 400 Euro (with VAT) or below is realistic in my opinion.

The question: What is googles aim ?
To make profit from sold phones.... or make (sustainable ) profits with ads with higher market shares ?
