10 Billion Android Market downloads and counting

(Cross-posted on the Official Google Blog and Android Developer's Blog)

One billion is a pretty big number by any measurement. However, when it’s describing the speed at which something is growing, it’s simply amazing. This past weekend, thanks to Android users around the world, Android Market exceeded 10 billion app downloads—with a growth rate of one billion app downloads per month. We can’t wait to see where this accelerating growth takes us in 2012.

To celebrate this milestone, we partnered with some of the Android developers who contributed to this milestone to make a bunch of great Android apps available at an amazing price. Starting today for the next 10 days, we’ll have a new set of awesome apps available each day for only 10 cents each. Today, we are starting with Asphalt 6 HD, Color & Draw for Kids, Endomondo Sports Tracker Pro, Fieldrunners HD, Great Little War Game, Minecraft, Paper Camera, Sketchbook Mobile, Soundhound Infinity & Swiftkey X.

Of course, none of these apps would have existed if it weren’t for the developers who created them. Every day, these developers continue to push the limits on what’s possible and delight us in the process. For that, we thank them.

Please join us in this 10-day celebration and check in every day to see what new apps our developer partners are making available on Android Market - for only a dime.

  9. @Fry
Try to buy the apps through the market in your pc browser. I think then you can buy apps while only sending it to your new device later.

  10. @Arnaud i tried to buy them through my pc browser but it isn't working neither. In fact there is just no need in regular time to let people buy apps that aren't compatible. These 10 days of celebration are the exception.

  11. I found that not all the advertised apps were going for 10 cents. I found this out when I tried to confirm my purchase and then to my surprise I was told I was to be charged $3.99 while the two previous purchase screens mantained it would be only 10 cents!! I've complained and no responce from either the developer or Google.

  16. Google has to work on making paid apps easier to sell.

    1) Paid apps are still not available everywhere.

    2) There's no easy way to buy apps without a credit card for most users. Nothing equivalent to the iTunes gift cards.

    3) Slow OS upgrades inevitably mean that app developers use lower API levels to reach more of an audience. But that results in poorer quality apps which probably hurt sales.

    4) Storage is an issue. Not every app is App2SD capable. Including quite a few of Google's own apps. Yet, cheap Android devices come with very little onboard memory, severely limiting the number of apps that can be downloaded.

    5) Piracy is an issue. It's not as rampant as some would argue. But it's bad enough that it might be keeping some developers away.

10 billion is nice. But as one of those rare Android users that actually buys paid apps and supports developers, I'd like to see Google address some of these issues. This is the only way we'll get quality apps.

Stop aiming to have another 10 billion more apps downloaded. Aim to have a billion or more paid apps downloaded. That would be a real accomplishment. Free stuff is always popular. Bragging about giving away free stuff is just so weak.

  18. This is a great promotion.

However, I just found out most of my purchases are canceled and it happens 24 hours later.

I normally use an iPhone as my phone as it works well with my lifestyle. IT doesn't mean I don't have a Nexus S (and want a Galaxy Nexus), however it's off most of the time so I used the web Market to purchase the apps.

So the first day I bought most of the apps, only to find out the next day that the purchases are canceled. Naturally I never turned on my phone to download them.

So I'm guessing my only resort is piracy - try to do the right thing and get shot down. The regular price of those apps is ridiculous and I'd never pay for them (nor use them). But now that I've been tempted, I don't see any other way.

As a first time app buying experience from Google - I have to admit it sucks. I don't even understand how app purchases can be canceled a day later after everything said all was good.

If you're listening - offer these apps again. Or at least offer me the chance to retry the transaction.

  23. I came across that not all of the marketed applications ended up opting for Ten pennies. I came across this away once i attemptedto validate my own acquire then i'm happy to report I was told I used to be to be recharged $3.98 while the two earlier acquire screens mantained it will be simply 10 pence!! We have lamented no responce through both the developer or even Search engines.
