Introducing the Android Market website

Wednesday, February 2, 2011 | 10:30 AM

Over the past two years, developers around the world have helped make Android Market the go-to place for more than 100,000 apps, games and widgets. Previously, you could only access Android Market directly from your device, but today, we are introducing the Android Market website that lets you browse and search for great apps right from your web browser.

The website makes it easy to discover great new apps with a bigger, brighter interface. You can also send apps directly to your Android device with just a few clicks—no wires needed. We’ve built in new social features, too. You can share apps with your friends through Twitter. And you can read and post app reviews directly to Android Market from the web or from your device.

And what about all those apps you’ve already purchased and downloaded? Sign in to the website with your Google account and click “My Market Account” to see all the apps you’ve purchased or downloaded. It makes managing all your apps quite easy.

The Android Market website was officially unveiled today during an event at Google headquarters where we showcased Honeycomb (Android 3.0), our latest Android release built from the ground up for tablets. Honeycomb has a completely redesigned user interface, with more interactive notifications and widgets, improved multi-tasking, and the latest and greatest Google Mobile services optimized for tablets. We also showed off pre-release applications optimized for Honeycomb, from over 17 developers including:

  • AccuWeather
  • CNN
  • Disney Mobile
  • The Economist
  • Fuze box
  • Glu Mobile
  • Google Body
  • Grocery iQ
  • Intuit
  • Ngmoco
  • Pulse News
  • Quickoffice
  • Time Magazine
  • TouchType
  • Trendy Entertainment
  • War Drum Studios
  • Weatherbug
  • Zynga

Stay tuned for more at Mobile World Congress (February 14) in Barcelona where you'll see more than 50 developers demoing their latest phone and tablet apps at the Android booth in Hall 8.

Trying to sign into the android market sight but I keep getting an "invalid request" error. Is this happening to anyone else?

opuntia said...

I'm not able to sign in with my google account. Whether I select the "Sign in" on the top right or the "My Market Account" on the bottom, it directs me to a google accounts page that says basically nothing but "Invalid request"

Superlink X said...

Same here. I keep trying and get the same error.

TheManBlog said...

Same for me, cant sign in

Anthony said...

Ditto here

Street View LOL said...

Yep...Invalid Request.

I get "Invalid Request" when I try to log in with my Google Apps account.

test said...

Same for me. What gives?

Brendan said...

Same here.

Chris Vaughan said...

Yes, same problem here.

You know, Google, announcing products that are brittle and break as you're announcing them doesn't give us confidence.

john said...

That's it? After a year of hype, that's it?

Disappointing...

...and sad.

mohammad said...

Same here :\

and drew25827 said...

Same here and I can't download apps on my phone either....

wytek said...

Same thing here... invalid request o.O

Subra said...

Can't login. Says Invalid request.

error "invalid request"

Ac3theone said...

looks good but i cant sign in, i do plan on getting a android phone though.now that theres a website for the apps it just makes me want to get the phone more

Ac3theone said...

this is a nice little way to get a few apps ready for when i get my android phone.

Dawid Gatti said...

Cool, no support for Google aps for my domain! yee, Google style.

Superlink X said...

@Dawid Gatti: No one has access yet. There is no reason to believe that apps users are not allowed to use the service. Currently, no account is able to access it, as the sign in button just returns invalid request.

Superlink X said...

Ebo said...

Yeah, can't seem to get in either. WTF?

RMK said...

I'm guessing that somebody forgot to remove restriction which stopped access outside Google network :-)
And probably this cause our problems.

But despite this, I love web interface for Android Market :-)
And I'm really impressed by Honeycomb presentation. I cannot wait when I will able to put my hands on it :-) both as user and developer.

Omer said...

I am also getting the Invalid request error..

Is this live yet ?

No luck here either. Still not live? Interface looks pretty sweet...looking forward to exploring.

Loony2nz said...

I used Chrome and was successful in signing in. Previously unsuccessful with Firefox (and this was only moments in between trying, so try Chrome).

Peter said...

No I won't use Chrome ... what kind of a deal is it that it doesn't work with Firefox?

RMK said...

It works also with FF.
I was able to login into it both with Chrome and FF.
I'm stil got errors when I'm trying to install anything, but I suppose it wil fixed in minutes.

PucKo said...

Could Android Market please respect my browser settings choice of language?

My pages are full of German, and although I am in Germany now, I do not speak, read or write in languages beside English and Swedish.

Peter said...

Yeah, it works now, including the remote install.

Suggested improvements for the account page:

* Provide filtering on Free/Paid.
* Show cost in user's currency (you can obtain the conversion rate used in the transaction, right?).
* Total the cost.
* Provide download if information on a page as a spreadsheet (csv).

DeadNotSleeping said...

Was getting the invalid request error, but it is working fine. I like this a lot, as I prefer to get the information about apps from my laptop. Also the ability to send it to different devices is cool as well.

Kristopher said...

I was able to sign in however when I try to download an app I get the message "There are no android phones associated with this account. Please sign in with a different account." I've had this google account associated with my phone for almost a year now. What gives!?

Marv said...

It's working really well now and this is exactly how it had to be (and should have been for some time). Only concern I have is that Apps are being Downloaded automaticly and that's sometimes not what I want to do because my Phone is not on WiFi. So a download queue or an option for WiFi-only would be nice to have.

Mike said...

Well, now that the site issues have been sorted out and we *can* in theory access it, I can confirm Dawid's report that Google Apps for My Domain accounts are left out in the cold.

Sigh.

But then, we should be used to it.

Joel said...

It looks like this doesn't work for Google app's accounts (customized domains), or at least I can't seem to log into my account for this.

amo said...

able to log in & install apps :)

Cody said...

This is outstanding. A much needed update. Love installing directly to my i9000m. No problems at all :D

deadhippo said...

Looks great. My page is showing in Japanese because I live in Japan. I would like to be able to change that to English like with other Google websites.

MAQUIDO said...

Ok.. i have the same issue... what can i do to attach my motorola Backflip.. to my account? i use Google apps account and a gmail account? what can i do?

Stellar Drift said...

And the site is buggy:

1. It doesn't respect the language setting of the browser, it picks a language based on the IP number - which is a HUGE NO NO

2. It doesn't work with mine and a million other accounts saying "There are no Android devices associated with this account." even though there most certainly are.

mikaela said...

Signed in with no problems. Installed with no problems.
So far so good.

YeongYM said...

Ditto comments about ability to change to language manually - I want English descriptions despite being in Hong Kong. Any currency displayed in wrong too!

Dita Surya Kartika said...

I visited the site and to get the apps we should TYPE THE APPS NAME IN THE SEARCH BOX!!!

What if I don't know the name and just wanna browsing the categories???

Dain Binder said...

I like it; the auto install is nice. This is such a better way to explore and find new things.

LiveTex said...

EVERYTHING working perfectly. Of course there's room for improvement (as in ALL things in life). Those who want their docs can use Google's Chrome to Phone straight from their Chrome browser. Music streaming coming next month... can TV & Movies be next...???.. YES !!! The Best platform is setting new standards for the future.. Today ! Thankyou Google !!!!!

I really dislike that the market has regions for no apparent reason. I want to install japanese programs on my phone, what's so bad about that?

Marketenabler + installing from my phone for now...

etomilin said...

For some reason Web marked misses half of my apps in My account.
And there are some apps on the list that I never used.

Ron said...

You have no indication of the number of downloads until you open each and every app description page. This makes the entire site USELESS. All of it! Why did you even waste your time on this google?

Jaša said...

I'm rather dissapointed. There's no significant difference to phone's market. And paid apps are still blocked - at least for some non-US countries. Like the rest of the world doesn't use credit cards or paypal?

=MUPP= oGre said...

Doesn't work with my Google Apps account. #fail

Paul said...

GJ Guys! :D

Mark said...

Paid app visibility depends on a variety of factors.

If you are logged in, then you see paid apps only if your (at least one?) Android device has a sim card from a paid-app country.

If you are not logged in, then you see paid apps only if your connecting from a paid app country.

That means you now have a choice of sim-swap or VPN to see paid apps...

Julia Seaman said...

I got in FINE! I was already logged into my gmail when I attempted to sign in. It just magically signed me in as if I were already, because I WAS.

con io said...

interestingly there is not much mention of smartphones in regards to honeycomb release.
does this mean development on this front has stopped ?

Zanshin said...

Looks like there's a problem with a lot of people's gmail accounts where their android devices aren't showing up in the new market settings. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?fid=1c88c8d311c1b54000049b61e24eaada&hl=en

Steve said...

It doesn't work with mine and a million other accounts saying "There are no Android devices associated with this account." even though there most certainly are. Come on Google - stacks of people are having this problem - please sort it out!

twinky said...

I have a Google Apps account, and it doesn't work for me.

LindaTerry said...

Web based Market is definately a welcome addition, but please allow language options, i'm from UK living in Greece!! Not all of my apps are shown on my account at present, teething problem maybe?

Keep up the good work Google!!! :)

Foxter said...

Please! Please-please-please make a space bar between ~RUB and a price. For now hard to see a price in numbers
For example "~RUB87.55 BUY" in first time is read like "RU 887.55"

p.s. sorry for my english...

CDL said...

It doesn't show all my apps, and it shows some I have uninstalled.

I hope there are plans to add the Android Market to Google Dashboard

GAFYD Update: Just got an email last night notifying me that my Google Apps for Your Domain account had been "transitioned to function more like a full Google Account" -- and lo and behold, now I can get into the Web Market using that account.

Timing, it would appear, is everything!

Steve R. said...

dear google, please change the logo of the android market webstore and add a "beta" badge.

I am still getting a SSL Error "This is probably not the site you are looking for." every time I go the Android Market Page.

Gary H. said...

It would be nice to be able to search by developer name, so as to find all apps by a particular developer.

Alberto said...

Hi all when i try to download apps from the market appear "no devices associated for this account" i have tablet....solutions please?

fdsgrewyfgr said...

Any chance of fixing the two obvious bug introduced recently?

1) Why does `my orders` on the Android website only show me 9 random apps from the many I have installed? Wouldn't showing all of them make more sense?

2) On my phone I can only see apps I've not installed to SD card on the `my apps` section, unless I uninstall updates to the marketplace

keep it up give more information of products this product is awesome latest mobiles launched

Dave said...

I'm confused.. what is the difference between Market and Appbrain? Why not just merge the two? Google is used to sign in on both.

Spent the entire time since launch trying to get the Web Market to actually download anything to my phone. Finally managed to get it working yesterday. Now the Web Market no longer thinks I own an Android phone.

The Web Market is nowhere close to being ready for general use.

I tried to access android market using firefox and was told it was not trusted because the certificate belongs to google.
How can I trust a product that uses someone elses certificate?
Reads as shoddy practice to me.
