Galaxy Nexus now on sale in Google Play
Tuesday, 24 April 2012 | 08:00
We started shipping Nexus phones more than two years ago to give you a pure Google experience and access to the latest Android updates. Today, we’ve started selling Galaxy Nexus (HSPA+) from a new Devices section in the Google Play web store, so you can quickly and easily purchase an unlocked version of the phone. We want to give you a place to purchase Nexus devices that work really well with your digital entertainment.
Galaxy Nexus by Samsung runs the latest Android software, Ice Cream Sandwich, with Google mobile services, Google Play and new features like Android Beam and Google+ mobile hangouts. It also offers a 4.65” HD Super AMOLED display that’s perfect for watching movies, playing games or reading books on the go.
First available in the U.S., Galaxy Nexus costs $399 and arrives at your door unlocked, without a carrier commitment or contract. You can use it on the GSM network of your choice, including T-Mobile and AT&T. It also comes pre-installed with the Google Wallet app which lets you easily make purchases and redeem offers with a tap of your phone. Best of all, we'll give you a $10 credit to get you started with your new mobile wallet.
We’ve come a long way since the first Android devices started hitting shelves three and a half years ago and since the launch of the first Nexus device. More than 300 million Android devices have been activated globally. We’ve worked with developers and content partners to launch Google Play, offering more than 500,000 apps, millions of songs and books, and thousands of movies. And we’ve implemented new customer support services to improve the purchasing experience on Google Play. We’ve taken all of this into consideration in designing Devices on Google Play. We hope to bring it to more countries soon.

Now can we ship internationally. When I went to my local importer I had the guy behind the counter chastise me for buying a phone with a 5mp camera. He said 'we have plenty of Androids with 8mp cameras'. When I explained I wanted ICS he berated me over and over again saying 'Every new Android phone has the latest operating system, Google sends it out over the Internet!'. This was December last year :S

I bought the international GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus when it first came out back in November and I'm running on T-Mobile USA's network. Will I be able to get Google Wallet installed now without having to sideload it?

@Timothy Choi Are you able to access the HSPA+ network when running in Tmobile? I heard that it is only limited to Edge.
Reply is appreciated.

Don't bother - I believed the Google line "to give you a pure Google experience and access to the latest Android updates." when I bought my Nexus S back in July 2011. How many other phones have already gotten the ICS upgrade? I'll never buy another "Google Experience" phone again.

As far as I know, all the nexus S already have ICS. My GSM Nexus S is already on 4.0.4 .. A while ago, I saw the announcement for CDMA Nexus S 4.0.4 release as well.
You should go to settings and check if you have a system update.

Thanks - I've been checking daily for a few months now. ATT says it's a Google issue and Google says nothing - because I can't actually talk to them.
Did you get an OTA update or did you have to install it yourself?

Now this really represents how much is this phone worth. Guys this was a last-gen device with a next-gen price when it was announced so this is a welcome move.
And BTW: as for the next Nexus device I hope it will be really innovative and you won't put a 5 MP crappy camera sensor into it again. This little thing spoiled it all for many, the camera in Galaxy Nexus was one of the most criticized things.

Finally a way to buy a non-grey-market replacement for my AT&T band Nexus One! Please stick around this time. Add more devices--but not carrier-style flavor of the hour devices. How 'bout a version of this but with LTE?

@Jazzyoli - thanks for the tip, but I gave up last night and installed CyanogenMod.
Last July, when I bought my Nexus S, there were a lot of android phones to choose from. Hardware wise, the Nexus S was a poor choice - it was under-powered and didn't have a SD slot OR a notification LED. But I bought it anyway, because Google promised me that if I bought this phone, even with all of it's deficiencies, I would be among the first people to get OS updates.
So I bought the phone, based on that promise. And I've been waiting so long and so patiently for them to keep their promise that I've lost sight of the fact that it is impossible for them to keep it.
So now I've installed CyanogenMod. I can't get ICS (stable version) through CM yet, but at least now I can start to like my phone again.
Thanks for all the help and the tips. I hope that you have a better experience with your phone than I did.

If Google does not correct the mess that Verizon has got itself into with the Galaxy Nexus, we may see Google go down the route or RIM/Blackberry. Verizon has frustrated so many who bought the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE.

A bit of research might show your ire is misdirected. Google very likely would be delighted to sell worldwide! Look at the restrictions imposed by the manufacturer. It is not uncommon to have exclusive distributor agreements on a national basis.
It's possible that government(s) restrictions on sales and importation are at play.
Barriers to free trade are usually put in place by governments with help by various lobbyists and other bottom feeders. My apologies for the other bottom dwellers.

And in a lot of markets the carriers are involved because they have agreements in place for exclusive rights to specific device models. The only reason Google is likely doing this in the US is that no US GSM carrier picked up the G-NEX. And that it took this long probably suggests Google tried that route first. Supposedly they got carriers very unhappy with them, and maybe manufacturers less so, for trying to break the existing carrier-centric business model with the Nexus One.
