A new Android Market for phones, with books and movies

Recently, we’ve been hard at work improving Android Market to give you new ways to find great applications and games, purchase books, and rent movies. Today, we’re releasing a new version of Android Market which makes all of these available on phones (Android 2.2 and higher).

In the U.S., you’ll be able to rent thousands of movies, starting at $1.99, right from Android Market on your phone. With the Videos app, available in Android Market, there’s no more waiting for downloads, syncing, or worrying about storage space. Simply sign into Android Market with your Google account, and you can rent movies from anywhere – the web, or your Android phone or tablet – and start watching instantly. You can also download movies to your device so they’re available for viewing when you don’t have an internet connection.

Also in the U.S., you can now purchase books from Android Market on your phone. Like movie rentals, books are linked to your Google account, so they’re instantly available across all of your devices – computer, phone, or tablet – without the need for wires or downloads.

You’ll be delighted to find we’ve overhauled Android Market to make it faster, easier, and more fun to discover great apps, movies, and books. We’ve created more space to feature some of the most interesting content of the week on the home page. We’ve added more top charts, with newer, more relevant items, and we’ve made it easy to swipe through these charts as you browse the store. We’ve also introduced new collections of great content, like staff picks and Editors’ Choice apps.

The new Android Market will be rolling out in the coming weeks to Android 2.2 and higher phones around the world. You don’t need to do anything - the update is automatic on supported phones. If you’re in the U.S., you’ll also be able to download the Videos app, rent movies, and buy books once you receive the new Android Market.

Your phone is about to get a lot more interesting! Enjoy the new Android Market.

  1. Is the HTC Incredible a "supported" phone?

  2. Does this new marketplace give more flexibility and options to Android developers?

As a developer with a small application in the marketplace, one difficulty I find is that the classification system is very coarse, and there is little information given to me about how users of my app reach it - do they search for it? If so, what did they search for to get to it? Do they get there by browsing? Etc.

    Thanks

  9. Can't wait for this. I've been wanting to watch movies on my phone. But will I be able to watch them on my HD TV via my HDMI cable? On my Charge it blocks that feature, even if I purchase the movie.

  11. What i want to know is why this app doesn't support Android 2.1, i have a HTC Hero which for some reason cant get Android 2.2 so i'm stuck in lymbo and it's not right

  12. First, let me compliment you on being clear about which features are U.S. only. (Amazon waited until the last possible moment of a lengthy process before informing me that their app store wouldn't work in Canada.)

But, there are so many Google products that are only available in the U.S. that Google is really starting to seem like a U.S. oriented company.

I think this perception will be bad for Google, and I hope you will soon bring more of your services to other countries.

I believe that is, in fact, the "Center of the Universe."

  17. A list of "Supported" phones would be nice...that way we're not in the dark if we're cut off. I would like to believe that ALL android 2.2 phones are supported but for some reason I don't believe that will be the case.

  18. I love the new design , and now that you are able to buy videos movies and books , i am open to more options to buy things on my favorite os system in the world.

  19. nm. it's only available for the xoom for now. according to the developer's site, other devices will be available in the coming weeks. probably to coincide with the updated android market rollout.

    ReplyDelete
  20. When will the videos app support more devices than just the Xoom? It says 2.2 and up , but none of my devices are supported (Nexus S, Nexus One, G-Slate.

    ReplyDelete
  21. i have a android 2.2.1 and my phone NOT supported by video app lolol

    ReplyDelete
  22. Will the Videos app ever make it onto the Droid X? Please say yes.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Any reason why Europe is not supported? We have bought Android powered devices like the US people did! Shame we have to wait every time a new update is rolled!

  24. Google is based in the U.S. So, it's only natural that once a feature is ready, it can be released in the U.S. first. Releasing in other countries often involves additional legal hurdles and considerations. So, it's only natural that it is released in this manner.

Japan also gets the PlayStation first and Europe gets Spotify first. It's just one of those things. It also wouldn't make sense to delay release until the legal issues are sorted out in every region because, by then, insiders will have leaked the technical details of your product to the competitors, who will jump on it and instantly release it in the U.S. to get an advantage.

So, they're just going to release the version that's ready first, then tackle the legal hurdles for other countries next.

  25. Really wish Google would start thinking outside of just the USA. Apple seem to be better at this. It wouldn't be so bad but it feels like most of the really good stuff at the moment is USA only. Google TV, Music and Voice are all services we would love to see as well as the new Movie rentals.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm more interested in knowing about subtitles in movies. There's millions of deaf people with money and yet so little services that does online movies offer subtitles.

It's a chance to get a leap in some sector, and Google have a good track record on providing subtitles in their videos so here's hoping they'll ensure movies have subtitles...

    ReplyDelete
  27. It seems like everything is for 2.2 now. What about the users who's provider won't upgrade? My phone is barely a year old & Sprint refuses to upgrade the HTC Hero so we're stuck at 2.1 so near yet so far away.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Bob:
Google Voice was released in June 2009.
Just how long should we wait for that and the rest of these US services to pass over to the rest of us?

Market your product to the world and you need to be making a better effort than this.

Who can I solve this problem??
    Thanks

  31. Still doesn't ask for password to buy apps?!

The Market app should ask for a passcode whenever the app costs money. Seems like Google still doesn't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Google are getting stupid and un-apple like...at least they can get all that apple offers..if I wanted to 'keep up' I've got to pay another $750/£500 (imintheUK)...I've got a HTC desire..which hTC are screwing the customers about COME GOOGLE sort yourselves out, eh !!! Your coming across very, very, very inconsistent!

  33. What a load of rubbish. I should never have dropped my iphone for an android. When will these ' new' features be available in Australia?
I think Android and indeed the market place app is really only aimed at kids at the moment and can't be taken seriously as a work tool or a replacement for the iphone or blackberry.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Is subtitles available in movies? If not, please add the subtitles feature for movies. I know tons of deaf people who would love to watch captioned movies on their phones.

  36. Please bring movies and books worldwide! I'm in the UK and really want these services!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Is the Samsung Fascinate a supported phone?

    ReplyDelete
  38. When is google going to admit that tablets exist too. Why does the market place require that you either be a phone or pretend to be a phone.

    Amazon, are you listening too??

    ReplyDelete
  39. Why is it so weird and "unfortunate" that Google products and services are available in the US first when it's a US-based company? Even a company with a huge worldwide presence has to do a lot of work to make their products and services available outside their home country. Should they sit on awesome new features until it's available to everyone? That's kind of not the way Google works.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have a Droid X and installed CyanogenMod... supported or have I gotta get a copy from some corner dealer like a junkie? Come on Google, show the modders some love... we bought supported phones too.

  48. If T-Mobile wasn't so damn annoying and didn't cap me at 5gb of data, streaming movies from the market or the netflix app would actually be a nice feature.

But no, T-Mobile is a crock of **** and makes these new additions useless to me.

  49. When the Android market is increasing rapidly in Asia region by the effort of vendors, it is sad that the Market covers these countries too slow. While we can purchase kindle, e-books from Amazon months ago, it is surprised that Google Market still far behind the pace. On the other hand, Google Market team also not includes the Macau to the paid app coverage as Hong Kong is a big mistake.

  54. Love it & can't wait for the new look to come out but then again, i was actually complaining about the web market since that looks dated compared to the new overall google look! :(

I guess i won't be getting this anytime soon since im in Sri Lanka & still using Andriod 2.1 on my poor phone but we can hope right...

  55. i patronize all of google's products...but why do you keep scorning just because i don't live in the US? If you're not scorning for that, it because i have a google apps account instead of a regular google account. where's the love big G? *single tear drop*

    ReplyDelete
  56. Agree with some of the comments above, great news for those in the US. Looking forward to some of this functionality in Asia, even though we can already buy dvd's for less than $1.99 :)

  57. Has the timeframe for refunds changed with this update?

  59. This app is laggy as hell on my Nexus S, I wish it was buttery smooth and had the touch feeling of a Windows Phone 7 or an iPhone.

    ReplyDelete
  60. "The UI tweak is a welcome change. From the screenshots, it looks to be a much more touch-friendly interface.

Hopefully there will be new features that will allow developers better opportunities to get their apps discovered. It's a fast growing app marketplace and there is potential for really good apps to be lost in all the noise.

  61. So, what about paying methods? Outside the us credit cards aren't that widely spread.

We were waiting now for a long time for extended paying models, so we can BUY apps at all. As for now in europe, many people just download their apps illegally, not because they are stingy about the 1.99$, but because they have NO possibility of purchasing apps in the market without a credit card.

What is about paypal? Telephone bill? Prepaid cards? I don't get it why such a huge influentional concern like google can't accomplish to offer better paying methods.

You should really focus more on that problem instead of rolling out the x. redesign again and again.

    ReplyDelete
  62. As a massive Google supporter it pains me to say this but this is where Google get it all wrong and Apple get it all right. The single reason why I wouldnt buy an Android tablet, or upgrade my current phone, is so many of the best features are unavailable outside the US. When Apple update and add functionality to their services they are available worldwide, instantly. Google concentrate on releasing in the US only. Apple have offered music, books and movies world wide for years now. How can Google steal the lucrative Apple users, that spend money, when they only offer have a service.

    ReplyDelete
  63. US only, and US only...yet another time. You better hurry up and consider that there are Android users outside the US. In fact, Android's best shot is outside the US, in the emerging markets who are not yet hooked on Apple.

    ReplyDelete
  64. How about us US citizens with US bank ussied credit cards living abroad??

    ReplyDelete
  65. It would be nice to see Google recognise that there are users OUTSIDE THE USA... whilst we appreciate everything you do and the innovation you bring, I get the feeling the rest of the world is considered a second rate citizen... BOO....

  66. All type android Apps are available here see http://androidapplications2011.blogspot.com/. Viji

    ReplyDelete
  67. International support is always lacking when it comes to google. I'm almost inclined to switch to Apple just because I know I won't be at the ass end of their service, regardless of where I live.

    ReplyDelete
  68. It´s really a shame that these features on only available to the US since there are more Android phones outside the US. Next time maybe something global would be a nice change.

    ReplyDelete
  69. You really need to bring back the feature to browse the latest/newly added apps and games respectively. This is essential.

    ReplyDelete
  70. When will Europe (Denmark?) get the new version of Android Market?

Regarding other google services, we also miss Google Music in Denmark.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I have a feeling that the delayed release outside the US is due to licensing issues for the right to sell/rent these movies and books more than anything.

    ReplyDelete
  72. But when will you open game categories for South Korea?
Korean government changed policy for you! (and for that i things.)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Alas, still no way to sort search results by rating or popularity.

  74. The program consumes much memory.

  75. "Android 2.2 and higher"...

So yet again those of us who bought phones such as the Sony Ericsson X8 (in my case just 6 months ago!) are left out in the cold because the phones (and OS) were obsolete even before they reached the shops (here in Portugal, in my case), and Sony/Ericsson have (and had) no intention of providing further updates...

    ReplyDelete
  76. For all the people complaining about this being US only at this point. Just be patient. Asia gets the newest phones before the US, you don't hear people in the US whining this much. Why the hate? You roll updates out locally and then expand. It's simple logic.

    ReplyDelete
  77. The "Videos" app doesn't work on my LG Optimus V. =(

    ReplyDelete
  78. @Glenn... You say the American's whine or complain about other countries when it comes to phones. This is so UNTRUE, American's have always complained about how countries like the UK can easily get brand-new phones free on release and how easy it is for us in the UK to get Sim-FREE handsets.

As for the Video App it remains down to the copyright from the movie industry NOT Google and there is a lot of background work to be done for other countries ie, region coding, censorship, ratings etc which would have to be programed for each country. Considering the movie industry is mostly American based it is easy for google to program the app for access to those movies. It is like NETFLIX that is an American based company which only allows access using American based IP addresses.

    ReplyDelete
  79. The spread of credit card in Asia may not as in US, but it is already very popular. Many of us have more than one, and involving the online purchasing frequently. Don't forget that the iPhone/iPad users are spread rapidly because the convenience of AppStore, and switching the countries with simple steps. The convenience of access full functionality of Android Market is the key to make it be as competitive as Apple's. In contrast, Google is too much restriction than Apple in this matter.

  80. XDA has an apk you can get - however your phone must be running 2.2

    http://db.tt/zvOFnm4

    ReplyDelete
  81. OK. Seriously, I do appreciate all the work you guys are putting into the market. But really - can't Google build a decent search for this thing? Google's whole business is search, it is pretty ridiculous Android has been in the market for 3 years now, and I still cant search the market by thing like cost, star rating, title, description, and comments.

    ReplyDelete
  82. This should hopefully put a major dent in video Piracy!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Ok this market app is compatible with froyo and gingerbread only. For all those who want this version of the market already, heres the download link: http://www.4shared.com/file/rKB036LJ/comandroidvending-1.htm

    Trust me it works

    ReplyDelete
  84. OMG, the new Andriod interface looks and works like Windows 7 phone. Copy cats.

    ReplyDelete
  85. So do I still get the update in the UK, just without the books and video features?
I hate the UK being so technologically behind :(

    ReplyDelete
  86. All phones Android 2.2 and higher are supported, the you can download the new market now if you want(it would be wise to wait). And the new interface is not a copy, if it was why did it take them 7 months? The movies and books section of the market aren't supported outside the U.S, because they don't have the licensing to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I did think it might be licensing issues, living in a place that still prohibits you from ripping a CD to put on your iPod.

    ReplyDelete
  88. The latest Market App (version 3.0.26) has a bug with regards to updating apps. Apps that have updates available are shown that they have updates available. When I tap on that updatable app, however, I do not see an update button. I only see two buttons; "Open" and "Uninstall." How do you update an app with the new Market app?

    ReplyDelete
  89. My guess that the reason it is only available in the US and only supported on some phones goes back to the concerns of media companies about the security of their product. They can't get the kind of security they want on some of the older Android devices and I'm guess copyright issues are why it's only available in the US.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Hmm i like the new UI, even if it looks a bit like Win 8 Tablet UI :)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Maybe you want to move to the US, if you don't mind the unemployment rate, horrible economy, high taxes, careless spending, and bad politicians.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I also feel like mentioning the obvious fact that people live outside of the US... and we have "Mobile Phones" too! Have you heard we also have colour TV and they weird new thing called the Wide World Web or something... :(

    ReplyDelete
  93. No update for android 2.1 or lower?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Looks very good, thanks for that!!

    ReplyDelete
  95. I can only assume that most of you simply don't understand the overall complexity of launching products in a global market. There are numerous legal and financial issues to be addressed among other things. Therefore, as others have echoed, it only makes sense to establish a core market to launch and address bugs before complicating things with a worldwide offering. Those of you crying for it now would be crying just as hard or harder if Google launches worldwide and it has the slightest error.

Also, those of you complaining about your device not supporting the upgrade need to understand that there are some casualties in the evolution of software. I liked my Apple IIe from the 80's but I hardly expect it to be supported today. The mobile industry moves really fast and I think Google has to make certain cutoffs (to the detriment of certain consumers) with their supported devices in order to truly push their software to the next level.

It doesn't feel good to have a phone that won't support the new app. But if you expect Android to design for older hardware and older versions of the operating system, you will ultimately get a less robust experience with each new release.

And let's face it... Google is a for-profit firm. While they do a better job than others at giving their consumers living, breathing products that update and improve during the life of those products, they also have to give customers a reason to upgrade and buy newer, better products.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I completely understand the issues faced when launching a product globally and am not blaming Google for this, but in the UK there is no reason for us not to have services like Google Music, eBook Store and Movies other than our out of date data protection and copyright laws.
But I suppose we just have to accept that there are bigger problems and quietly move on.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Is there anyway for the new Market to be available to Android 1.6?

    ReplyDelete
  98. We all understood the complexity and those issues when distributing the products to a global market, but this is not a reason to defend the matter when we see Amazon has distributed the kindle books to the same countries; the users of iPhone/iPad have the ways to access those appstore outside their countries - I know Apple see this but allows them to happen.
In contrast, the users in Android platform are the group of people in these countries couldn't purchase the same products as in other platforms. Don't forget Android Market has released nearly 12 months, and the progress is too slow when it has the very big installation base for business negotiation with the vendors.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Google needs to get its International head fixed first before it rolls out new stuff which is invariably fed to the US only. It means that most of the world is left behind with promises of service later. That just isn't good enough from one of the world's largest Global providers. As we all know from Google Voice a promise of service doesn't necessarily mean we are going to get any outside of North America. Google should at least apologise for areas not covered by a new release or make it clear that the release is for US only.

On a side note, I think that Goolge should be completely in charge of all Android OS updates, and have them available (all Android devices should be able to run 2.3.4) to every device. Not Motorola, HTC, at&t, or Verizon.

  125. Idea: Developer subscriptions. This is my most wanted feature with a similar premise to why people love subscribing on YouTube. Once you find a good developer I want to be told when they release something new. I want to see my normal app updates AND my developer updates in the area.

    This will
    a) Make it WAY easier to find new things
    b) Encourage QUALITY over quantity as trash devs will be unsubscribed from.
    c) Lower the cost of marketing for quality small devs
    d) Allow devs to better know their audience and perhaps offer bonuses/exclusives for subscribers
    e) Feel more personally involved with devs. eg You might be more inclined to buy other apps by the same dev if they are good at updating/customer response etc

  127. It is terrifying that Google doesn't remember about Europe where there are more dedicated Google users (at least some statistics say so;)

  128. Come on...way too much crying from people outside the U.S. I'm sure you guys will have it within a months time.

Lets not forget, you guys have Kies. One that actually works. Nothings more frustrating than seeing the European version actually work, or trying to use the U.S. approved version and crashing my phone.

  129. That's the thing, we don't want it in a months time. We want it when people in the USA have it. The USA wants things when we here in Australia has it. x country wants it when y country has it.

It's extremely frustrating living here in Australia when a lot of internationally renown companies, whether they develop games, deliver online services or manufacture products, can't devote a few weeks or months of their time in preparing contracts and organising international agreements to give us the same service the previously mentioned "center of the universe" has first hand access to. You're telling me that I'll probably have it in a month's time? Why do I want these new services in a months time when I've been waiting a lot longer for other USA-only services Google provides such as Google Books, Music, Voice or even Youtube movie rentals? It's becoming an extended list of services available to only a smaller niche in comparison to the rest of the world who, as mind blowing as this may be, have a higher population than those in the USA. If a company like Apple is able to release their new features, services (including books, mind you) apps and whatnot with as little time gaps as they can across countries, regardless of how long or complicated the process may be, why can't Google do the same?

Now, don't get me wrong, I really do love Google and I'm a proud owner of a Desire HD which I'd prefer over an iPhone any day, but if I were to roll back the clock to February when I bought this phone online knowing that Google will be releasing these great services to everyone but me, would I still have picked an Android phone? As annoying as this is for me to say, the answer would be no.

Of course, this is just the whiny post of one teenage Australian kid who is unbelievably annoyed by this whole ordeal. Compared to the other hundreds of millions of Android users (and the more important Americans), why would Google even begin to care about what I want when they haven't cared about anyone's for the last couple of years?

  132. lol center of the universe? It is only because Americans are too dumb to know that other countries exist in the world. The center of dumbfucks! that's what it should be. Americans...you are the most hated people on this planet. Don't make it worse for yourself!! The fact that the economy is number 1 there NOW does not mean it will be in 10 years, and no one is gonna give a fuck about you guys!! :-)

  133. It has been almost 2 weeks and I still haven't received the update. If I lived outside the US and had an unsupported phone I would understand, but I live in the US and have a Nexus S.
